UBI Study Backed by Sam Altman Bolsters Support for Basic Income

Over the past several years, the idea of direct cash transfers to low-income Americans has gained fast traction with more than 150 local pilots in 35 US states testing the idea of "basic income." The largest of those pilots didn't come from a city or county but from OpenResearch, a project backed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.

After three years of distributing $1,000 monthly to beneficiaries in Illinois and Texas, the organization's biggest finding was that the cash provided recipients with more flexibility.

Altman announced funding for the project in 2016 when OpenAI had only recently started, and he was also running the startup incubator Y Combinator. "I'm fairly confident that at some point in the future, as technology continues to eliminate traditional jobs and massive new wealth gets created, we're going to see some version of this at a national scale," he wrote at the time.

UBI is a nice term but it's a socialist concept that inspires laziness and less ingenuity in the world.

Wow, this is really interesting! I'm curious to know more about the methodology of the project and how they measured the impact of the payments. It's great to see organizations like OpenAI exploring innovative solutions to address income inequality.
