Ubernomics - fills intellectual gaps

I recently read a book titled “Ubernomics” by Barbara Gray. This book caught my attention initially because of an article that went viral back in 2014 and popped on my LinkedIn feed. The article was titled "Social Capital: The Secret Behind Airbnb and Uber". The author, of course was Barbara Gray. This article addressed key factors in the success of Uber by demonstrating the value of the social sharing economy which can help create low cost providers and the network effect. Fast forward to today... Barbara Gray authored a book - Unbernomics.

When Ubernomics came out I jumped to be one of the first to read it and I was not disappointed.

For 20 years I have worked in startups and internet companies. I have spent nearly ten years working in and around social media and yet some how I struggled to grasp the essentials of what truly made companies contenders…until I read Ubernomics.

Barbara Gray is an equity analyst by training. She has analyzed the social sharing economy and explained the fundamentals of success in this book.

The shift of salable assets from scarcity to abundance with the application of social sharing is only the beginning of the model for success.  As Barbara points out in her book, "the democratization (or unbundling) of physical and human capital enables companies to access a long tail of latent or underutilized assets, goods, and services. This creates abundance of supply, as inventory growth is not limited by traditional time or capital constraints."

In mapping this social abundance to a monetized business model she uses many real world business examples of how startups, and established Fortune 500 companies, are leveraging these concepts to build strategic market positions that are difficult for competitors - without that foresight - to match. These firms seek to satisfy the real and felt needs of their buyers to attract new (and current) buyers into a highly profitable business.

If you are a CxO, investor, entrepreneur or aspire to be one of these…. this book lays out the fundamentals of how to become a web 3.0 player and create a blue ocean of demand.

This book has been invaluable in helping me to understand what the next generation of business may well look like and how to succeed.

Here is a link to the book. Good luck.
