Uber Rideshare Lawsuit (2024 Update)
News stories and controversies have surrounded Uber (and the slightly less popular Lyft) ever since it entered the marketplace. There have been debates about how it should be regulated and classified, and these debates have played out at state and local levels.
Uber has also been the target of several lawsuits. Some of these lawsuits are still working through the legal system, while others have been resolved in various ways. The following is an introduction to Uber, its legal issues, and the current state of Uber rideshare lawsuits in April 2024.

There are many lawsuits against Uber and other rideshare companies. Uber has faced lawsuits in the U.S. and other countries. Here are some examples of lawsuits from other countries:
? A lawsuit was filed over Uber's facial recognition system.
? The U.K. Supreme Court ruled that drivers are not self-employed.
? Taxi companies claim Uber is not following French labor laws.
? The EU's top court ruled that Uber is a transportation company and can be regulated.

In the U.S., there are similar and unique lawsuits:
? Many passengers have sued Uber, claiming its policies led to sexual assaults.
? New York accused Uber of improperly withholding sales tax and not providing required benefits like sick leave and minimum pay.
? The U.S. government claimed Uber charged extra fees to people with disabilities who took more than two minutes to get into the vehicle.
? California drivers claimed Uber and Lyft were illegally setting ride prices, which is only allowed if drivers are employees, not independent contractors.
Some of these lawsuits have been settled, while others are still in progress.
So far, tens of thousands of people have received compensation from rideshare lawsuits. As previously noted, for example, 65,000 individuals were compensated in the disability lawsuit against Uber that was filed by the U.S. government. Many thousands were also compensated by the New York lawsuit. Some individuals have also received compensation in smaller lawsuits.
Unfortunately, compensation may not be equivalent to the damages suffered by the litigant. For example, in the New York lawsuit, $290 million was placed into an account for wronged Uber drivers.
However, more than 100,000 drivers were eligible for this compensation, which means the average driver got a little under $3,000. Some of those drivers calculated that Uber stole as much as $25,000 from them with their illegal activities.
