On the heels of allegations of sexism and sexual harassment, Uber’s first-ever diversity report is out – and it pretty much looks like every other tech company in Silicon Valley, The New York Times points out. About 36% of Uber’s global workforce is made up of women – in terms of racial composition, 8.8% are black and 5.6% are Hispanic. According to Google’s most recent report, 31% of its workforce are women, while 2% of its employees are black and 3% are Hispanic. One obvious problem is the lack of women and minorities in technical positions. Read our New Economy Editor’s analysis here.
That’s not the only bad news for the embattled company today. Uber announced it will stop operating in Denmark, blaming a new law that requires all taxis in the country to install video surveillance cameras, meters, and seat sensors. The legislation is the latest in a series of setbacks across Europe – courts in France, Germany and Sweden, among others, have also ruled against the ride-hailing app.
Jeff Bezos' world domination plans now include a new region. Amazon just bought the Amazon of the Middle East – Souq.com sells more than 8 million products to customers in the Gulf countries and Egypt. The two companies did not disclose the size of the deal, but CB Insights valued Souq at $1 billion. Cultural fact of the day: a souq or souk is a marketplace or commercial quarter in Western Asian and North African cities.
Facebook is going full Snapchat. The social media giant is launching Facebook Stories; which is like Instagram Stories; which was inspired by Snapchat Stories. Yes, it's a bit confusing, so here's everything you need to know about the new camera features. There is a clear strategy behind this move towards visual communication, as TechCrunch’s Josh Constine explains: “If the camera is the new keyboard, then the future of social media will look more like a slideshow than a Word document. So while Snapchat invented Stories, we’ll have to get used to using them everywhere.”
Less than a week after the failed attempt to repeal Obamacare, President Trump signed an executive order undoing Obama-era climate policies. It seeks to halt federal agencies' future planning for the effects of climate change and end its characterization as a "national security threat" by the Pentagon. According to Mark Lynas, a British journalist who focuses on climate change, Trump’s new order "is intended to make coal competitive again in the US economy, by refossilizing the power sector and demonstrably increasing carbon emissions." Total US coal jobs plunged to 53,000 last year, the lowest going back to 1978.
Consumer confidence surged to a more than 16-year high. The Conference Board said its index jumped 9.5 points to 125.6 this month, the highest reading since December 2000, indicating the economy was regaining momentum. The economy's strengthening was underscored by other data released today: Home prices in 20 US cities rose 5.7 percent in the last 12 months, increasing at the fastest pace since 2014, led by Seattle and Chicago.

7 年I just dont get the umbrage and name calling here.Uber has lost over $5B in the last 2 years...their diversity hiring in the tech positions is no worse than any large tech company..will they be in business 2 years from now? I have grave doubts. Coal industry??? the downfall...nothing to do with Obama or Trump...far more to do with cheap natural gas and a huge oversupply of coal from Australian and Brazilian coal companies...token executive orders are good lightening rods for the extremists of both political parties. ..

7 年He can't undue the Obama years no matter how many executive orders he reverses. It's a testament to his presidency more than Obama's.
