Uber is showing their true colors in 2017, and to the surprise of all, it's pretty white. Don't tell that to Uber's head of HR though. Uber's late diversity report comes at an interesting time. Read on. #UberDiversityReport
Uber Thought it had Stolen the Keys to the Future
For many years Uber hasn't been transparent with its own employees, but it has been a year so far of reckoning for Travis and his squad of elite white males.
LinkedIn is so aware of the lack of inclusion in Silicon Valley, some editors even made this a trending hashtag #UberDiversityReport, and I couldn't agree with them more.
But hang on a second, look at these faces? They seem diverse.
Uber has a Reputation Problem and is a Self-Driving Public Relations Nightmare
Uber has in a single gallop of infamy, poor judgement and reckless leadership, perpetuated the three greatest sins of poor brand management.
- They have been accused of corporate theft and will have to answer for it it court
- They have been accused of sexism and serial sexual harassment
- They have video of their CEO blaming a driver for their lack of responsibility
Uber White Man (Deer) in the Headlights
It's not about how you want Uber to look and feel, it's really about what Uber is.
Uber is not Lyft, Uber believe they are the next Amazon, and based their core values on the the latter.
Uber is a $70 Billion dollar Unicorn with a reputation of a bully, a brawler and symbolizes all that is wrong about venture capital and Silicon Valley culture.
“Every strength, in excess, is a weakness,” Liane Hornsey - Chief Human Resources Officer of Uber
Digging down into the figures though:
Uber Does Diversity Like Your White Grandmother
- overwhelmingly male employee base
- largest ethnic group is white
- technology jobs at the company — some 85 percent — are overwhelmingly held by men
- Only 36 percent of Uber’s work force is made up of women
- 50 percent of Uber’s employees in the United States are white and 31 percent are Asian, while 9 percent are black and 6 percent are Hispanic.
So how does Uber fair in the game of becoming the next monopoly?
In the last year alone, the company’s employee base has doubled in size to more than 12,000.
Uber is Just Another Failure at Inclusion & Diversity
- Only 22 percent of leadership roles are held by women.
- Only 15 percent of technical roles, including engineers, are held by women.
- For technical roles, those not White or Asian, make up just 3 percent each.
- When it comes to leadership roles, 77 percent is white, 20 percent Asian.
We have to remember with quick growth, Uber is testosterone running amok and on the loose.
Some 63 percent of managers (at Uber) had never previously held a leadership position.

Mr. Kalanick's list of corporate values include such items as:
- “super pumped”
- “always be hustlin"
With legal action taken by Google against Uber on behalf of Waymo,
- In 2017, we might add, "always be swindling". "have an open-relationship with the future", among others.
In a touching show of immigrant labor, the ride-hailing company also noted that 15 percent of its employees in the United States is on work visas.

7 年Skills are important, but getting an opportunity is more important. I am sure lots of smart women out there would become a fine CEO, but in reality they do not get that opportunity. Inclusion and diversity are important to progress a society. The ones who get the benefit tend to disagree. :)

7 年A person should be hired for their skills - period. Looking at the statistics of a company's hiring patterns is absolutely not a conclusive indicator that they are avoiding certain races or sexual orientation's and they're hiring process. We should be pursuing excellence not diversity.

7 年If someone, regardless of their sex or race, is qualified for a job in tech then they have the same chance as anyone else of getting the job if they have the skills to nail the interview and the other challenges they are given. It doesn't get handed to anyone to fill a quota. U.S. News & World Report said last year, "According to the U.S. Census Bureau, in 2014 there were more than 20 million children under 5 years old living in the U.S., and 50.2 percent of them were minorities." I'm sure many of these children will naturally roll right into tech education and careers.

7 年Does it matter that in 2011 only 15% of Computer engineering degrees went to Women? Can UBER be held liable for simple supply? Perhaps the problem isn't one of direct discrimination. Against the 15%, UBER's numbers start to look better. Additionally, while many like to ignore the fact, the U.S. is 77% white ( https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/table/PST045216/00 ) Now I'm no qualified "top voice", but when UBER has a 77% white management team, it looks to me that they are right on the money with their hiring based on the national demographic. This is a poorly written and researched article, based on the pursuit nothing more than being inflammatory. By no means am I a fan of UBER, but lets be statisticians when we bring up statistics.

7 年Uber is the most diverse company in the world. The workers involved are locals where they operate. Why this brouhaha about diverse and inclusion? What is the underlying motive to demonize the company?
