Uber Banned in Delhi, and 7 More Monday Headlines

1) Uber is barred from operating in New Delhi after a user reported being raped by her driver on Friday. The woman, a young financial executive, said she dozed off and woke up to find the car parked in a secluded area. The police say a medical examination confirms her allegations and the driver was arrested. Uber's hiring practices are under scrutiny: it's unclear whether the company ran a proper background check on the driver, who had reportedly been arrested for sexual assault before. The company was already in the cross hair of the Delhi transport authorities for operating without proper permits.

2) Japan is worse off than previously thought. Third quarter figures were revised to show an annualized 1.9% decline of GDP, after a 6.7% drop in the second quarter. This confirms Japan is in a recession, which will be on every voter's mind come Sunday's general elections.

3) An American doctor who survived ebola shared his experience in the New York Times. Dr Ian Crozier's story is a powerful inside look at the battle medical professionals are still fighting every day in West Africa. Dr Crozier contracted the disease in Sierra Leone; a tenth doctor died there from ebola this weekend.

4) North Korea denies having hacked Sony Pictures ("a wild rumor," says the state news agency.) But it is also gloating. Breaking into the movie studio's computer system and dumping its proprietary documents online was "a righteous deed," says Pyongyang. The country is not happy about Sony's flick "The Interview," in which Seth Rogen and James Franco plot to assassinate Kim Jung-un.

5) When it rains, it pours: Sony's Playstation Network was also hacked. The online store was down overnight. A group calling itself "Lizard Squad" has claimed responsibility.

6) A former Apple exec will spend a year in jail for selling company secrets. Former global supply manager Paul S Devine will also repay $4.5 million. He gained millions by passing insider information to Apple suppliers that helped them negotiate better deals.

7) You behave less ethically when you're stressed. In a study run by professors at UNC's and Northwestern's business schools, professionals who were made to feel anxious were more likely to justify stealing office supplies, lying or mishandling confidential information than their more zen counterparts. (Maybe a line of defense for the Apple guy above...) So that's how you can justify a nap and meditation room to the accountants.

8) Grumpy Cat has earned nearly $100 million in two years – more than many Hollywood A-listers. The feline's owner was able to quit her day job as a waitress. The Internet's favorite non-cute animal has endorsed cat food (of course), appeared on The Wall Street Journal's front page and has its own movie – so terrible it's bound to become a cult classic.

we cannot put other drivers and stakeholders in jeopardy by ban. this means majority of good drivers are controlled by one wrong element.is this right on the part of govt.have tighter laws for recruitment.overhaul the police dept.give punishment to culprits within 24 hours of committing crime.ban their licence.why not india have a unique system like in the US-999 when the police arrives in 9 minutes.the taxi company should monitor night taxis like Aircrafts are monitored on a radar.i mean develop a unique system.viswanathan balakrishnan

It's an unfortunate case, but it's a naive to think that banning Uber does anything for the problem of rape.
