UAB supporters’ anger misplaced

UAB supporters’ anger misplaced

The UAB basketball team won nine straight home games, triumphed in the Conference USA Tournament, and captured a cherished birth in the NCAA Play Offs. But as the clock counted down in the final moments of the Conference USA championship game, some UAB fans broke into the all too familiar chant, “Fire Ray Watts!”

I completely understand why many UAB fans are upset. Last fall the plug was pulled on UAB football and the decision and announcement was totally mishandled. We must blame someone.

I’m not going to take up for Dr. Watts or the public relations department at UAB, but I contend that the decision to shut down UAB football was made when the on campus stadium was nixed by the University of Alabama Board Of Trustees. If UAB had been allowed to build its new stadium, neither Dr. Watts nor anyone else would have been in a position to close the program.

We have a right to be angry, but we should be angry that we have allowed Birmingham to have such poor sports facilities.

Early round NCAA Tournament games are being played in Dayton, Jacksonville, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Portland, Charlotte, Columbus, Omaha, and Seattle. Birmingham was never considered and will never be a possible NCAA Tournament site with our existing facilities. Nashville played host to the Southeastern Conference Championship. Please review the list and you will see our ‘used to be’ Southern peer cities—Jacksonville, Louisville, Charlotte, and Nashville (by the way—all have consolidated county/city governments).

If we as a community put as much effort and passion into building a better Birmingham region as a few vocal UAB supporters have put into trying to fire the ‘messenger,’ then we might actually have something to show for it.

Watts or not, new UAB President or not—that is not going to change our facilities or our circumstance.

As the clock counted down in the final moments of the CUSA Tournament and I looked down at the triumphant UAB basketball players with the words “Birmingham” plastered prominently on their jerseys, I wished the chant was not “Fire Ray Watts,” but “One great Birmingham!”

David, do you also oppose the investigative journalism of Kevin Scarbinsky and John Archibald at al.com and Jon Solomon at CBSSports.com? Should they shush, too, to make you happy? I hope you do realize that football is the tip of the iceberg here, and that the plans the UABOT has for UAB will gut any ability of Birmingham to move forward. I'm fighting this fight for Birmingham. Why are you opposing it?

The fire is obvious, not misplaced and will go on until the rats are gone. Shall we blind ourselves and pretend the huge blockers of nuts and bots were not there and turn our heads to look the other ways??? That's called "cheat yourself". The new evidence and voice are surfaced of the "black box" operation, and we are still called to pretend "hearing not, seeing not"??

David you make some good points in your post. And Birmingham is being held back from it's potential from some on the UABOT, limiting both UAB and Birmingham's potential. And currently that is being directed to Ray and rightly so.
