U2

This hyperfixation has been engrained in me since early childhood thanks to my dad. I can clearly see little me sitting in the backseat of my dad’s car, driving to Plehn’s Bakery in Louisville, KY on a Saturday morning to get our donut fix and hearing “Unos, dos, tres, catorce” and rock and roll of Vertigo by U2 blaring through the speakers. As he would put us to bed when we were little, my dad’s go-to lullaby was the lyrics of MLK. Even still if I can’t sleep, I’ll quietly play it to help calm my mind. Beautiful Day would be the early morning carpool anthem on the way to school. In June 2017, our family finally went to see U2 live at Soldier Field in Chicago. Like all great artists, they were better live and put on an amazing show.

I don’t think I’m alone with this, but I seem to go through music phases where I listen over and over again to an artist, an album or a song. U2 has always been in my musical repertoire. Recently on a long solo car trip, it was late, and I was getting a little tired. I put on The Joshua Tree album and instantly remembered all the words to the songs. With the volume turned up, the rock ballads helped energize me and forget about the passing of time on the drive but focus on what song was next.?

Since that drive, I’ve found myself listening to U2 again. I’ve hyperfixated on listening to the albums all the way through. I’ve found that I like different albums at different times. How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb has been great for while I’m doing school work. All That You Can’t Leave Behind has been my walking-to-class album. Boy has been my workout album.?

U2 has made a big impact in my musical taste, some may find that a good thing and others may find it bad. I would like to greatly thank my dad for educating my sisters and me. U2 has provided songs for each of us that mean a lot. So thank you Dad, and thank you Bono for all that you both have done.?
