??Hey, you! So, if you're reading this, then it's definitely a sign that I expect something of you. You're either a student or a learner — whichever one it is, there are a few things you can do to improve your skills and your life.
??? Do more of what works. ??Do less of what doesn't.
?? Learning the art of prioritizing is a daily challenge we face in our society. It takes practice but developing a workflow and a routine (something like an hour of Zen time) that helps you focus on things that are truly important to you — even if they appear not to be right now — will help you feel better about yourself and your life as a whole.
The first thing you want to do is to learn more about yourself — specifically, who you are. What do you love to do? Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Who has been the greatest influence on your life so far? What are the most important things for you in your life right now?
?? As a student, you have the right to break loose from the tyranny of the clock. Learn to govern yourself, not just by the clock, but by your conscience as well.
Stephen Covey has an easy way to help you figure that out:
He says...
??"You are being governed by your internal compass and conscience, which is something of enormous good," he says. "Now is not the time to be controlled by the clock."
?? Stephen Covey visited his daughter Maria a few days after she had a new baby. Unexpectedly, he found her frustrated instead of happy.
"I have so many other projects and interests that are important to me," she told him. "But right now, I have to put everything on hold." He asked her why. "Because I'm spending all my time just meeting the physical needs of this new baby," she replied. "I can't even find time to be with my other two children and my husband."
Seeking to understand, he said, "So, this new baby is consuming you?"
"I have other work to do. I have some writing projects that need my attention," she said. "And there are other people in my life."
?He talked about the concept of a compass vs. a clock—that our internal compass guides us through life and when we're doing something of enormous good for others, we shouldn't be controlled by the clock (the external thing).
It is the utopia he envisions — a world where the only rule that governs you is your own conscience.
?? Dr. Seuss had it right as well - just take that One Thing, the one thing you can do the best, and do it at One Time, the time when your creative juices are flowing.
?The lesson: Do what you can when you can. When you can't do anything, don't beat yourself up.
