Typism Book 7 is now open for entries
It's only fitting that Nikita Prokhorov has designed this year's Typism as an ambigram to go on the cover of Book 7. Ambigrams are words which read the same when turned upside-down. 2020 has turned our world upside-down, and it's time to share some changes with you, which we hope will make the whole process sustainable for us, and more enjoyable for you.
"My work got accepted into book 6, the first one I had the courage to actually submit for, and now I wonder what I was waiting for? To be 'ready'? To have more followers? To draw the perfect piece? There is no such endpoint. Put your stuff out into the universe."—Lily Boyce
What work will you submit to the Typism Book this year?
There are three phases to the submission process: pre-order the digital copy of Book 7 for $10 USD; submit up to ten pieces of work before 31 January 2020; and receive a hard copy of the book as well as the digital copy, if your work is accepted.
Here is a list of the steps you can take to everything you need to know to submit your work to the Typism Book successfully.
FAQ 1: Does it cost money to submit my work to Book 7?
Yes, unfortunately, due to COVID postage issues in 2020, we are now charging $10 to recover costs, but this $10 will also ensure you receive a digital copy of the book when it is ready in March 2021. We will also send you a free printed copy of the book if you are successful in April.
FAQ 2: Does it matter if my lettering is not in English?
No, not at all. We regularly publish work in other languages, just make sure it’s not rude or offensive to anyone. We will be checking. That goes for English work as well.
FAQ 3: How is the work judged?
All distinguishing features, such as name, gender, country are removed from your work, and they are then shortlisted and put before a panel of judges. We select 192 final pieces for inclusion in the book, judging only the quality of the work, not the celebrity status of the artist.
FAQ 4: How do I submit my work?
Head to the submission page and click the orange button to pre-order the digital copy for $10 USD. We will then email you submission instructions.
FAQ 5: How many pieces can I submit?
There is a limit of ten submissions in total from one artist every year. Don't send everything you've ever created. We suggest spending some time to curate ten of your best and most varied pieces.
FAQ 6: Does work have to be created specifically for the book?
Whilst we love it when people create work specifically for the books (and people do) that is not a requirement. You can submit client work, personal work, or work you've created in the past.
FAQ 7: Will there be a print copy this year?
Yes! We will definitely make a printed copy available, as well as the digital copy, but you will not be able to pre-order the print copy. It will be available from the Typism Bookstore after April 2021.
FAQ 8: Will there be digital copies available of the other books?
Yes! You asked, and we listened. Books 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 will all be made available very soon for digital download at $20 each.
FAQ 9: Can I submit colour artwork or only black and white?
We only print black and white artwork so crisp, clean typographic vectors print best, but some tone is allowed in your submissions. You can submit photographs if they are clean and clear and we are looking for all forms of the written word: calligraphy, typography, type design, hand-drawn type, hand-lettered type, tattoos, signage, beautiful handwriting and so on. If you do submit colour work, we will convert it to black and white, so we prefer if you convert it first to avoid any nasty surprises.
It now costs $10 to submit your work to the Typism Book, but that will also entitle you to a digital copy of Book 7 once it becomes available.
Every brand has a story to tell. I'm hoping to be the creative that will tell yours.
4 年A great solution to all angsts and fears about submission costs this year.
