Types of Training Activities: 6. PC Simulations
PC Simulations use playing cards to reflect real-world objects and processes. The rules of PC simulations typically encourage the participants to discover principles of interpersonal interactions.
Sample PC Simulations
Here are six examples of PC simulations:
Deeper Cut
The purpose of this PC simulation is to observe carefully and figure out how a magic trick was conducted: The facilitator performs the magic trick with a volunteer-spectator. Other participants watch carefully, detect how the magical effect was achieved.
Garbage
The purpose of this PC simulation is to explore the clash between corporate competitiveness and environmental protection: Each player receives five red cards, two Spades, and one Club. The red cards are regular garbage, the Spades are hazardous garbage, and the Clubs are monitoring cards. The object of the game is to play according to a set of rules to get rid of all the garbage cards from one’s hand. The first person to do so wins the game.
Induct
The purpose of this PC simulation is to discover the pattern among different sets of three playing cards displayed by the facilitator: The facilitator begins by secretly writing the definition of a pattern (such as two cards of the same color and one card of a different color, arranged in any order) and lays down several sets of three cards that confirm to the pattern. The first player to discover and announce the pattern wins the game.
Karma
The purpose of this PC simulation is to compare living now and delaying gratification: The player has a set of 10 Clubs cards and 10 red cards. They shuffle the packet of Clubs and turn over the top card. The value of this card is added to the player’s score sheet. Other rules specify penalties. At the end of 10 rounds, the player’s total score is compared to the criterion score of 50 points.

Read and Play
The purpose of this PC simulation is to explore how players handle rule violations: Two slightly different sets of rules for a card game are randomly distributed to the participants. The participants are unaware the rules are different. They are asked to play without talking to each other. The differences in the rules create chaos during the play.
Suits
The purpose of this PC simulation to compare leveraging one’s strengths or living a balancing different assets: In the first part of the game, the participants win by collecting the longest set of playing cards of the same suit. In the second part, their goal is to have the same number of cards of each suit. This requires the participants to balance the treatment of different suits.
Detailed instructions for conducting these six PC simulations will be provided in our forthcoming book.

3 个月Garbage is one of my favorite games for exploring environmental issues. With variations we explored both pollution and poor quality construction. I can't remember if it was in the initial activity but we added a twist in the construction version with the first person to get their houses to the market got the largest reward. After the last player gets their houses built a disaster occurs and poorly built houses were destroyed and the costs tallied. The cost of damaged houses being destroyed by a "disaster" was shared by all at the table.
