The interesting fact about tourism is that it has numerous types which relate to diverse fields. So no matter what you study, for instance, Favour studied ecology, she can decide to do ecotourism. That's awesome.
Now to what we have today, I will be explaining a few types of tourism to you.
1) Leisure Tourism:
This is the first on my list. Leisure tourism is a type of tourism you carry out during your free time. Here, you relax and experience a different environment. Local tourist attraction sites are the major focus of leisure tourism.
Food is the major inspiration for many leisure travellers. Most leisure tourists visit new locations to take their local food. Also, this leisure tourist may decide to chill in a resort complex or hotel while enjoying spa treatments, skincare, and hair treatments, among others.
2) Adventure Tourism:
I can tell you for sure that adventure tourism is one of the most exciting types of tourism. From the name, ‘adventure,’ you should know what it means. Adventure tourism is simply the exploration of remote places which involves a new landscape or culture.
In adventure tourism, tourists can carry out activities like skydiving, rafting, skydiving, skiing, snowboarding, paragliding, base jumping, and rock climbing, among others. The kind of activities you will carry out depends on the type or nature of the tourist attraction site you intend to visit.
3) Business Tourism:
Business tourism is a type of tourism for business purposes. Another name for business tourism is ‘corporate or MICE tourism’ which means meetings, travel incentives, conferences, and exhibitions. Business tourism is a type of tourism that requires proper planning, budget forecasting, and detailed reporting by the tourists involved (admins and employees). Examples are exhibitions, trade fairs, incentive travel, conferences, meetings, and corporate events.
4) Ecotourism:
Ecotourism is a type of tourism that involves a tourist moving to undisturbed natural areas. What I love about ecotourism is that these natural areas are designed to minimize the negative impact on the environment which is a big plus for me. I can still have fun while enjoying real nature.
In ecotourism, you will get exposed to wildlife sanctuaries, eco villages, and conservation projects. What a sight to behold!

5) Cultural Tourism:
Culture is the total way of life of people. Yeah! I enjoy learning and experiencing new cultures aside from mine. I can tell you it’s interesting. You get to know how a particular set of people dress, their traditions, norms, greetings, languages, likewise cuisine.
Formally, cultural tourism is a type of tourism that explores the customs, traditions, art, and history of a place. Cultural tourism is one of the most popular forms of tourism that attracts millions of visitors each year. As a citizen of Nigeria and Africa at large, I recommend foreigners to try out cultural tourism here. You won’t regret it. We have numerous cultures you would want to explore.
6) Culinary Tourism:
Speaking of culinary, I don’t think there is anybody who doesn't love good food. Culinary tourism is also known as ‘food tourism.’ This tourism involves tourists who visit destinations just to explore and try out their cuisines. As a culinary tourist, you can visit diverse restaurants, meet professional chefs, participate in food events, and even learn new ways of cooking. It’s as fun as that.
A few of the top culinary tourism destinations in the world are Japan, Italy, Spain, Thailand, Ethiopia, and New Orleans.
Some day, as a culinary tourist, I will love to try out foreign cuisines like Japanese, Chinese, and Spanish delicacies.
7) Sports Tourism:
As much as I would love to go on, sports tourism is the last type of tourism I want to talk about here. Sports tourism is a fast-growing sector of the global travel industry. This type of tourism involves travelling to participate in or observe sporting events.
For example, attending international sporting events like the Olympics and the World Cup. Also, you can go for golf vacations and skiing holidays. All these depend on you and the type of sports you want to engage in. Then, you can check for destinations with your desired sports for tourists and plan to get there.
With all these types of tourism I have listed, tell me, who would ignore the fact that tourism is a very wide and interesting field? I bet you wouldn’t.
That’s all for today. In my next article, I will be discussing ‘why you should explore local tourism this year.’ Stay glued to my page.
