Types of Social Media Marketing

What is the first thing that comes into your mind when we say Social Media?

Instagram?

Facebook?

WhatsApp?

What if we tell you that these are mere social networking sites and not the forms of social media itself. Would it affect your marketing strategies?

Well, it should. After all, social media marketing accounts for more than almost 50 percent of brand marketing strategies! It is one of the most important legions to confirm a brand identity, perception, and eventually awareness leading to popularity and preference. The reason why brands nowadays are essentially emphasizing social media marketing performance. So, what are the forms of social media that we can consider for marketing strategies?

The first and the foremost are Blogs and Microblogs. Apart from the literal length difference, the one thing that remains common between blogs and microblogs is the space they provide to put forth one’s thoughts, ideas, opinions, and beliefs in front of the entire world. Be it Twitter or WordPress, such online blogs help us define the organizational values and interim beliefs that define the customer base.

The second most important is social networking sites. Remember the movie, ‘Social Network’? Well, that’s not just about Facebook. It is rather about each of these web-based tools that allow individuals to connect and form a virtual community through socializing via different sites. Like Facebook, Snapchat, etc.

The third is multimedia sites. If social media sites are all about finding like-minded people, then multi-media sites are all about sharing audio-visual content with the world through tools such as YouTube, Picassa, Vimeo, etc.

The fourth important pillar of social media marketing is Mashup! Interestingly, this is more than just songs as it uses content from two or more external data sources, combines and integrates them, and thus creates new value-added information. This is the reuse and repurposing of the source data by retrieving source contents with open APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) and assimilating them according to the information needs, instead of navigating them sequentially.

The fifth important pillar of social media is RSS. It’s a web-based app that can pull the content from sources that are structured in standard metadata format called RSS feeds that is easy to syndicate the contents from RSS formatted documents.

The sixth essential pillar of social media marketing is the widgets. These are small applications either on the desktop, mobile device, or on the web. The widgets bring personalized dedicated content to the user from the predefined data sources.
