Types of LPG Gas Flowmeter and Gases They Measure

Types of Best Gas Flow Meter and Their Suitability

When measuring Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), selecting the appropriate gas flow meter is essential for accurate and reliable measurements. Here’s how each type of flow meter listed can be used for LPG gas measurement:

Thermal Mass Flow Meter

Thermal Mass Flow Meters are generally suited for dry and clean gases. LPG gas can be in liquified state under some conditions, which may affect the accuracy in flow measurements if thermal mass flow meters are used.

Due to this reason thermal mass flow meters are not a suitable option for measuring LPG gas.

Vortex Flow Meter

Inside Vortex flowmeter vortices are created which measures the flow rate of the LPG gas flowing in the stream. Vortex meters are more suitable for low-viscosity fluids such as water, fruit-juice, milk and more which flows easily.

LPG gas has the potential to change its state from liquid to gas and vice-versa under certain temperatures and pressures which can cause vortex detection, leading to inaccurate readings.

This makes the vortex meter not suitable for LPG gas measurement.

Electromagnetic Flow Meter

The main use of electromagnetic meters is to measure flow rates of conductive fluids. Since LPG gas is not conductive electromagnetic fluids are not used to measure it.

Electromagnetic flow meters are not suitable for LPG gas flow measurement.

Turbine Flow Meter

Turbine flow meter uses the kinetic energy to rotate a rotor which is used to measure the flow of the medium inside the pipe. They are ideal to measure low-viscosity fluids like LPG and provide reliable readings.

Turbine flowmeter is sensitive to flow rate changes and can measure both liquid and gaseous forms of LPG.

Generally, turbine flowmeters are used to measure LPG gas.

Oval Gear Flow Meter

Oval gear flow meter consist of two toothed wheels that are oval shaped. They can measure both state of LPG liquid as well as gas, which makes them suitable for measuring LPG gas. Oval gear meters are a suitable option for measuring the LPG gas.

Coriolis Mass Flow Meter

Coriolis mass flow meters are among the best choices for LPG measurement.

They measure mass flow directly and provide highly accurate measurements regardless of the fluid state of the LPG or any other medium (liquid or gas). This makes Coriolis mass flowmeters a best choice among other meters for measuring LPG gas. Coriolis meters can handle changing densities, temperature, and pressures, which is ideal for LPG gas.

Cone Flow Meter

Cone flow meters are differential pressure meters which uses Bernoulli’s principle to measure either flow of liquid, gas or steam in pipes.

They can be used for LPG gas measurement, but they work under certain conditions and for specialized applications. Coriolis meters are less likely to be used for LPG gas where Coriolis flowmeters and Turbine flowmeters are more preferred choices.

For most LPG measurement applications, Coriolis mass flow meters and turbine flow meters are the preferred options due to their accuracy, reliability, and ability to handle the unique properties of LPG.

Types of Gases

There are various types of gases in the industries used for different purposes. To accurately measure these gases gas flow meters are used. Here are some common types of gases measured using gas flow meters:

1. Natural Gas

Natural gas is a mixture of hydrocarbon rich mixture of gases. Methane, ethane, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and other gases are also found in natural gas. Natural gas is a product of crude oil just like LPG gas extracted from earth’s core. Which is used in residential heating, electricity generation, and industrial processes.

Suitable flowmeters are: Thermal mass flow meters, ultrasonic flow meters, turbine flow meters.

2. Oxygen (O?)

Flow meters are used to measure oxygen cylinders pressure loss and are essential to measure accurately for patient’s safety. It is also used in medical applications, welding, and chemical processes.

Suitable flowmeters are: Thermal mass flow meters, variable area (rotameter) flow meters, differential pressure flow meters.

3. Carbon Dioxide (CO?)

Carbon di-oxide us is utilized in food and beverage industries, fire suppression systems, and greenhouses.

Suitable flowmeters are: Thermal mass flow meters, Coriolis flow meters, ultrasonic flow meters.

4. Compressed Air

A compressed air is air that is forced inside a smaller space by increasing the pressure and making its molecules closer to each other. Compressed air is used in manufacturing and non-manufacturing industries from pneumatic tools to HVAC..

Suitable flowmeters are: Thermal mass flow meters, vortex flow meters, turbine flow meters.
