Whether your smile is genuine or not, it can act on your body and mind in a variety of positive ways, offering benefits for your health, your mood, and even the moods of people around you.

Reward: Smiles that convey approval, happiness, contentment, and other positive feelings.

Affiliation: Smiles that communicate positive intention, trustworthiness, belongingness, compassion, and social connection.

Dominance: Smiles intended to convey contempt, disgust, or superiority. Such smiles have been shown to increase cortisol (stress hormone) levels in people they are directed toward.

Studies have shown that people are incredibly perceptive when it comes to reading and recognizing these smiles in social situations.

You’re scanning through a website showing photos of prize winners, and of course all of them are smiling.

However, as you look through the array of apparently happy people, some strike you as particularly posed, while others look completely natural.

In fact, those stiff grimaces on some of the winners annoy you for some reason you find hard to describe.

They seem to be faking their pleased expressions, and you imagine that as soon as their image was preserved for posterity, their faces returned to their normal scowls.

The very best actors are trained in the ability to fake happiness without seeming insincere. You might even argue that it’s harder for Oscar-quality performers to fake happiness than sadness.

Tears go a long way to communicating sorrow, but there are no such accompaniments to help a smile convey a genuine emotion.

For ordinary people, the job of putting on a smile for the camera would seem to separate the easygoing people who like to laugh naturally from those who are only smiling because someone shouted “cheese!”

Smiling is a universal language that can be shared between people all over the world. But a smile can be used to communicate much more than happiness.?

You might be surprised to learn that there are over a dozen different types of smiles that people use in a regular rotation and they all have different meanings — whether we’re consciously aware of it or not. People smile when they’re embarrassed, angry, flirting, and even frightened.

As we continue to navigate within a remote-first world, body language may not be conveyed as easily as before and facial expressions are relied on more than ever to tip us off to someone’s feelings and intentions.?

A dampened smile is one that a person would use when they’re trying to conceal the intensity of the positive emotion that led them to smile. Someone giving a dampened smile will raise their cheeks, but try to pull the corners of their mouth downward.?

This type of smile is interesting because it reflects cultural norms and how different areas of the world vary in how they share smiles. For example, in a country like Japan where displays of emotion are discouraged, people?smile with their eyes rather than their lips.??

A forced smile is one you’d use in an uncomfortable situation where you’re trying to show positive intent. Also great for diffusing situations, a forced smile might be over-exaggerated and last longer than a natural smile because it’s meant to be noticed.

You can smile when you reunite with a best friend, or when you’re miserable, uncomfortable, or embarrassed. As seen through the eyes of a beholder, though, which smiles will be perceived as those positive social cues that will make others like you? When you’re judging people in reality, rather than based on a photograph, a whole host of factors come into play your messages are congruent when you want someone to like you. It may be worth practicing your smile in the mirror or using selfies to see if you’re communicating everything you’d like to with your smile — even if it is dominance. I can conclude that smiling may not predict the length of your life, at least when other factors are taken into account. The extent that smiling brings you the rewards you desire in the form of having people like you and want to work for you or with you. Polite smiles are very common. This is the type of smile you use when you’re first meeting someone or you’re trying to convey interest in a long-winded story. Polite smiles are often employed in the workplace because they give the sense of friendliness without the emotional intimacy of a genuine smile.?
