Tyler Perry

Tyler Perry

Do you watch and pay attention to people who do things in a way that seems to be off the beaten path or “contrary” to how the “establishment” says it should be done? I often do this and one of the things it’s done is have me observing Tyler Perry. Did you know he’s converted 330 acres of an old army base, in Atlanta, Georgia, to studios that are larger than all of the others COMBINED?

It’s true. And, he just hosted a major red carpet, star-studded event (sort of a Grand Opening) this weekend. Oprah, Beyoncé, and Samuel L Jackson were a few of the invited guests.

It’s such a big deal that there is even a sign on the interstate leading people to the “Tyler Perry Studios”.

Did you know that Tyler Perry is pretty much ignored by Hollywood…even today, after all of his accomplishments and accolades? I guess that just goes to show you, you don’t have to be popular with the “in” crowd to make money and to be a huge success.

As I was watching this story, the interviews and some of the backlot footage, I wondered to myself, if he could have imagined all of this when he was younger. Probably not, having grown up in a not so great living situation.

Yet, in all the reading and studying about Tyler Perry there is one thing that always stands out to me…

…it’s his planning and how he plans and works to get things accomplished. And, he keeps moving forward – no matter what other people think.

I heard him say he knows who his audience is and he serves them and by doing so has changed millions of lives because young black people see themselves in his productions. He doesn’t worry about what is happening in Hollywood or anywhere else – he’s creating his own legacy.

Tyler Perry didn’t create this on a whim. He didn’t have an idea and just wing it to see what would happen. He has built him empire on planning, implementing and executing his plans in a strategic manner and it has served him extremely well.

The same is true for other business people you might have heard of like Richard Branson, Daymond John, Dan Kennedy, Barbara Corcoran, Cindy Crawford, Martha Stewart and more.
