The Human Brain: A Mind of Its Own

The human brain is an extraordinary thing. And new research reveals it’s even more impressive than previously thought.

As part of the Human Connectome Project, scientists have created the most comprehensive map of the cortex to date, revealing at least 180 regions that are critical to language, perception, consciousness, thought, attention and sensation. It boggles the mind!

A Helping Hand

Turns out our minds aren’t the only factor in learning; the body also has a key role to play. From pointing toddlers to gesturing adults, combining action with speech can help improve learning and memorization. This nymag.com article explores how it works:

“Gesticulation isn’t divorced from speech. It’s completely tied to your speech . . . It’s part of your cognition. It’s not just mindless hand-waving.”
