Two Years of Gratefulness.
Today marks my second year building MEMBER.ID with the team as well as my second year being based in Jakarta. I never thought that I would be back living and commuting day to day in my home-country again (last time was in 2006 while working for a multinational bank).
I've spent more than half of my life living abroad; to study, to work, to build businesses, to start a family, to learn to be independent and to let my children experience new cultures. Many people have asked me (quite frequently until today) why would I leave such a great life abroad for a life in Jakarta with all its' humidity, traffic jam, mosquitos, terrible healthcare and adding to the list is the recent power outage?
Well, I've been reading about mindfulness and the importance of being grateful, so let me share with you what I'm grateful for about the life in Jakarta:
- Being close to family, childhood friends and to have a full support system (being a working mother, this element makes a huge difference).
- Being able to teach my children about the rich Indonesian culture; the language, the food and the beautiful destinations.
- Being able to share my passion for the loyalty business, travel and points-geekiness in different platforms and a variety of public events.
- Being able to build a business with partners who share the same vision in creating a better Indonesia through innovation. We started out as a team of 4 to a team of 50 in less than two years.
- Being able to lead and serve a team as well as learning from them, they are the ones who motivate me everyday to be better and to always stay 'hungry'.
- Being able to collaborate with different businesses and talented individuals to help educate and inspire Indonesians.
- Being able to look after myself through exercise, living a healthy lifestyle and have a positive social surroundings.
I had a great life and living arrangements overseas but somehow was feeling unfulfilled. Now that I've learned to accept some (not all - maybe soon) of the disadvantages about Jakarta, I rarely complain about the small things and have been feeling a lot more fulfilled.
Moving back to Jakarta from the United States was a decision made quite instantly and definitely one of the best decisions I've ever made.
I often forget, but I still try everyday to have an attitude for gratitude.
