Two Ways To Measure Your Mindset Progress

I recently had a client reach out to me with an encouraging update on his progress. We've been working together to shift his mindset from a worrisome and anxious perspective about generating business to one of abundance, where he can recognize his progress and successes.
To measure our improvement in both performance and mindset, I use two criteria: frequency and intensity. Frequency refers to how often we engage in negative and positive behaviors and thoughts over a period of time, while intensity relates to the impact these thoughts have on us in the present moment. Frequency can be measured by the number of occurrences of negative and positive behaviors, while intensity can be rated on a scale of one to ten.
I'm thrilled to report that my client has made significant progress in reducing the frequency and intensity of his anxiety, even in situations where his proposals were delayed due to client holidays or budget considerations. However, he found that worries started to seep in, and he wanted to ensure he didn't allow himself to become overwhelmed.
In these moments, I recall the wise words of my mentor, Alan Weiss , who talks about "securing the water-tight doors" on a ship. It's about affirming to ourselves that we won't let any negative thoughts we've already overcome resurface in a significant way. For my client, this meant adopting a mantra like, "Hey, the guy is on vacation. He deserves his time off. I'll let this go and review it next week. Now, what new thing can I work on to generate business this week?"

Extensive research has shown that our thoughts profoundly impact our ability to perform. Negative thinking not only pulls us away from positive actions, but it also drains valuable energy that we need to succeed.
