Two-Thirds of Shoppers Are Prioritising Sustainability in Their Purchases: Key Insights from a Recent UK Survey

A recent online survey reveals a compelling shift in UK consumer behaviour: a significant majority of British shoppers are committed to purchasing products that offer environmental and social benefits. However, many still face challenges in identifying these sustainable options.

Key Findings from the Survey:

  • 66% of UK Consumers Are Keen on Sustainability: A whopping 66% of UK consumers express a strong desire to buy products with positive environmental and social impacts. The “green consumer” trend is on the rise!
  • Understanding the Footprint: Surprisingly, only 7% of respondents consistently understand a product’s environmental footprint. Bridging this knowledge gap is crucial.
  • Sustainability: Just 18% find it straightforward to determine a product’s sustainability clarity matters!

Specific Consumer Actions:

Willingness to Pay More: A report by Supercharged Commerce found that 33% of surveyed UK shoppers have already paid more for ethical items. On average, British consumers are willing to pay around 20% more for ethically or sustainably sourced products. (Source Retail System)

Being ‘Green’ Is the Norm: An interesting trend: 80% of UK shoppers describe themselves as “environmentally friendly.” Additionally, 82% consider environmentally friendly labelling in their purchase decisions (Source Retail Focus)

Packaging Preferences: 59% of consumers actively avoid products with excessive or non-recyclable packaging, showing a clear preference for eco-friendly packaging solutions. (Source Retail Focus)

Health and Safety Considerations:

Notably, 47% of respondents mentioned that their health and safety have been or could be impacted by climate change. This awareness drives their preference for sustainable products. ( Source Internet Retailing)

Brand Loyalty: A third of respondents are more likely to try new brands or products if they clearly communicate their social, ethical, and environmental credentials.

Need for Clearer Sustainability Certifications:?

This growing consumer awareness underscores an urgent need for transparent and reliable sustainability certifications. Over 75% of respondents prefer products with official certifications. Additionally, 41% have abandoned purchases due to unclear or dubious sustainability claims, emphasising the critical need for clarity in sustainability messaging.

The Climate Pledge Friendly Program:

Badge Visibility: Customers now see the Climate Pledge Friendly label when searching for over 25,000 products. This label signifies that the products have one or more of 19 different sustainability certifications, such as reducing the carbon footprint of shipments to customers.

Success Metrics: Since its launch, the program has attracted 37.6 million customers and resulted in over 1.16 billion product sales. Notably, the badge’s visibility has surged by 42% since last year, indicating a growing demand for certified sustainable products.

Commitment to Sustainability:

A major retailer collaborates with numerous trusted third-party certifications to ensure that products meet rigorous sustainability standards. These efforts contribute to preserving the natural world and encouraging manufacturers to create more environmentally-friendly products.

Tom Lloyd, co-founder of Bloomsbury Mill, a brand featuring Climate Pledge Friendly products, shares: “The badge not only communicates our commitment to sustainability but also reassures customers that their purchases contribute to environmental preservation.”

UK consumers are increasingly prioritising sustainability in their purchasing decisions. Brands and retailers must enhance transparency and embrace sustainability certifications to drive meaningful change.
