Two Tales of One Tokri

Two Tales of One Tokri

Two Tales of One Bag !!

----------

I have been regularly using a "Tokri" for the longest time I remember. It fits my bicycle snugly and also preserves delicate fruits like bananas the best any bag can potentially do.

I had two incidents (stories) within a gap of few days that left me surprised with what people hold perspective (prejudices) of such a bag

The Positive Perspective:

------------------------

I was at a shoe shop to get a Gym shoe. After a few options that I had seen, the store person surprised me by telling that he knew the Tokri I was carrying. It has been got to this store by my sister and she had bought from this shop. He further went on to appreciate that my sister did not take any carry bag, did not want the shoe box, and just took the shoe in the Tokri!!. That one recollection of the shop keeper many years back had left a positive impact on his mind that he recollected it right away on seeing the bag carried by someone else. That is the power of positive impact.

I immediately became a repeat customer for the shop, though I was there the first time and we had a long healthy conversation on several topics.

The Negative Perspective

--------------------------

I was at the Gym with my Tokri holding my Gym shoes and water bottle. It was end of my Gym session and the security was wanting to have small chat with me. He asked me what I had in my backpack. I said it had Gym clothes and shower items. He then asked me what was in my Tokri, for which I mentioned that it was my Gym shoes and water bottle. The security guard caught me off-guard by telling me to get a better "sophisticated" Gym bag, and not to get such Tokri to the Gym. I was appalled at the perception of a security guard for the "Looks" of the bag, rather than the utility of the bag (especially when cycling).

I quietly ended my small chat and exited the Gym, .

My tryst with my Tokri continues (needless to say !!)

-----------

It is surprising how much people give importance to Perception and looks rather than the sheer utility, recyclability of simple things.

We talk about big things like Sustainability, Circular Economy. What small things can we do towards these important aspects, is left to each person interests and enthusiasm.

For me it is about giving a deaf ear to people like the Gym security and move ahead with my Tokri !!!

Great read Kumar sir??, Appreciate the idea of using 2 simple real-life conversations - one with the shopkeeper and another with the security guard to create a thought provoking article! Also reminds us about how we can support ‘reduce recycle and reuse’ in our own small ways!

It was a good read! Thanks for posting " Tokri" story.

'Tokho thali Tokri KO' , Looking posh and trendy is important for most people, to show off their cars, bikes, cell phones to friends and feeling proud of owning things which others cannot is the order of our days. Utility is what matters, good read Dr. Kumar Rajamani !
