Two stabbings in one night, 1 murder and 1 critical condition.

Two stabbings in one night, 1 murder and 1 critical condition.

Look at the increase in violent crimes of Hawaii, too often, we think that it’s not that bad. We look the other way, and just keep going with our day, convincing ourselves that this could never happen to us. That’s probably the exact thing that every victim has ever thought. Unfortunately, too many people refuse to put a priority on training. And then when they suddenly make the news, their first words are “I never thought it would happen to me.”

A large majority of the people that I know that take firearms training so seriously, a very high percentage of them absolutely refuse to train in any sort of combatives or martial arts. They have somehow convinced themselves that years of plinking at kokohead or shooting occasional IPSC matches, or “they took the class” is going to have them completely prepared to the most violent situation they will ever encounter and to make matters worse, their loved ones might be defending them.

And then of course you have the martial arts expert who’s NEVER been in a physical confrontation in his entire life, and suddenly, he’s teaching you life-and-death techniques with a bladed weapon, criminal psychology & some of the most insane techniques I’ve ever had the pleasure of witnessing with my own two eyes, and he will swear that they are foolproof. On many occasions, I’ve had to stop this kind of guy in the middle of one of my classes because they decided to turn a simple defensive technique into a potential mock homicide scene by disarming their partner in practice and then following up with the 50 slashes of death and multiple stabs to the back, throat etc. So, to this guy I say, guess what HPD is going to say to you when they roll up on the scene and if you survived the confrontation, and you’re standing there covered in the blood of your would be attacker? And you’re now standing there holding his knife or your own fox #599 Karamit and he now has multiple knife wounds and gashes in his back, throat & torso from the Hollywood knife disarming techniques that you just miraculously pulled off with dumb luck. The officer is going to draw his weapon on you, and you’re going to jail, for murder, if not not shot! And this is where somebody always tells me “but Bob, it’s better to be judged by 12 than carried by six.” Another thing factor in its, just because you have one, doesn't mean it's a good idea to carry it.

My response is always, “is it really? So now you’re sitting in OCCC with real criminals, murderers, and quite possibly friends or family members recently departed, and believe me, they will know what happened faster than the media ever does. Are you ready for that? Now you are incarcerated, facing murder trial, the financial burden you’re going to encounter is going to devastate everything that you have ever worked for, your home, your name, your reputation. And to make matters worse, now you are sitting in jail, your family is alone, and they have no one to help them." And here in Hawaii, do you really think that his family, the same criminal gene pool That he evolved from, the think they're not going to retaliate?

Most people never stop to think about the repercussions of their actions. Even when they talk about a home invasions, usually their first response is “let them try to break into my house and see what happens.” They never stop to think about this scenario or dealing with an entire crowd, or a female in the mix. Currently the Honolulu Police Department is searching for an 18-year-old female who was also “involved” in the stabbing. They had not stated her relationship is with Cardona, but I’m pretty sure we can figure that out. Have you ever stopped to think about how you would deal with the primary threat, while simultaneously dealing with a secondary & tertiary threat? I try to put one of those scenarios in every one of my classes.

“Police say it happened just after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday near Kuhio Beach. The 22-year-old victim was confronted by a group of individuals, a fight ensued, and he was fatally stabbed.”

Notice what the last sentence says, (the victim) was confronted by a “group” of individuals (a mob). That means HE WASN’T GETTING AWAY. If you have one of my mission bravo T-shirts, take a few seconds and think about the “rules for survival” on the back. Because the police didn’t say this guy. And nobody came to help him. Ultimately, it was his responsibility.

I’m going to be starting my Krav street combatives class up again in a couple of weeks. And I would like to welcome you to everyone. At least this way, you can learn the understanding of reality-based self-defense whether you are unarmed. And dealing with potential situations like the dozens that we have been seeing over the past year.
