Two projects for English teachers

What, How and Why: a manual of better English is a unique text book, aimed primarily at young adults and teenagers with poor literacy skills, and at those who would like to help them, parents, employers, tutors, classroom assistants, youth workers and teachers. The book’s purpose is two-fold: to engage disaffected young people in learning and to show something of what needs to be done. It aims at the standard of English expected of educated adults. Last year a neighbour’s son whose school predicted a U grade for GCSE English had six lessons with me and we worked through the first six chapters of the book. He passed with a C.
The book has been successful in schools, in an army prison and with tutors and parents.
Ten Minutes Max Very short stories for reluctant readers, with ideas for further work. These can be downloaded, free.
