Two mtu engines provide fast, eco-friendly ferry service in Taiwan

For ferry operator Fei Ma Ferry Holding in Taiwan, three priorities were top of mind when building a new catamaran #ferry: vessel speed, fuel consumption and vessel stability. To meet these priorities, shipbuilder Glow Marine in Singapore used two mtu 16V 4000 M65L engines in the new catamaran. The benefits of choosing this engine type are numerous, so it's worth taking a closer look!

First and foremost is the #sustainability of the engine. It has the potential to meet the stringent IMO III, or EPA Tier 4 emissions regulations, when fitted with one of our mtu selective catalytic reduction systems (better known as SCR). What's more, this year we are aiming for a release with hydrotreated vegetable oil, or HVO, which can also ensure cleaner operation of the ferry.

The two mtu Series 4000 engines will also provide the necessary speed to transport the around 200 passengers quickly between the stations: on average, the ferry will travel at 39 knots, and in tests it even reached 44 knots. But besides speed (as mentioned, one of the top priorities for the operator), reliability and time between overhaul also exceeded the customer's expectations.

You may have already heard last year that we were able to drastically increase the time between overhauls for some of our #CommercialMarine engines. The two mtu 16V 4000 M65L engines are among them! The engines can last up to 50,000 hours and still deliver full performance, depending on their actual load profile.

The two engines are the first two of their kind in #AsiaPacific, even though Glow Marine has had good experiences with mtu engines before – one of the reasons why they directly recommended our engines for the new project

Nevertheless, you should not rely only on my words. I recommend you to have a look at our website. There we have collected testimonials from the customer and let the experts on site have their voice heard with their experience with the engines.?

What do you think about the project? Have you already gathered experience with our mtu Series 4000 marine engines? I look forward to hearing from you in the comments! #TalkToUs
