Two Keys to Talent Development & Retention for 2023

If the pandemic revealed anything it's the opportunity for leaders to converse and work with their employees on an individual basis. There are two primary areas leaders should focus on in 2023 to protect their teams and their organizations:

1.??????Motivation

2.??????Personal Career Coaching & Development

Motivation is not trying to motivate someone specific to their job rather finding out what motivates that individual and becoming a true partner in that pursuit. This is a game changer! It is not always the promotion rather it might be something that they want to do or a project or a type of work that maybe they're currently not doing. With that being said, yes some people do want promotions and think about bringing any of these areas into conversations such as:

“Bob, what if you were to work more fluently and cooperatively with Lisa how do you think that might help you achieve your goal of becoming a team leader?”

This seems so simple yet let's say Bob is having an adversarial interaction with Lisa and they do not get along typically we call those people into the office and tell them to work more effectively together. The example above clearly illustrates the opportunity to bring personal motivation which creates an increase in emotional attachment Ultimately leading to greater acceptance of the change needed.

Personal career development is having conversations around what somebody may want to do. During the pandemic, many people have lost their way and have even lost sight of their own career aspirations. Here are a few questions that can get the ball rolling and help leaders help their employees discover their motivation:

  • What motivates you?
  • If you had your way, what would you be doing more of?
  • What do you currently love about your job?
  • What is one thing you would love to add to your job duties that you think would really increase your excitement?
  • What's your ideal destination in terms of where you want to end up with the type of work that you might be doing? How would you go about describing that?

The key element is to bring motivation and personal career development conversations together. Once motivation and career aspirations are understood these can be brought into everyday conversations ultimately leading to more motivated and engaged employees who are less likely to leave your organization.

Motivation and personal development are two hot topics. Took me ten plus years to digest that I cannot “motivate” anyone.
