The Two Hiring Secrets I Learned From David Cancel

The Two Hiring Secrets I Learned From David Cancel

I’m building a team for the first time.

And that means spending a lot of time on hiring and recruiting.

And damn those two things are harder than I thought.

I'm starting to realize that there's no data that can help you in the hiring process...

Someone with the best resume on paper might turn out to be a terrible fit; someone that you love spending time with as a person might not have the exact skills you need right now. Or you might be talking to your next top performer and you just don't know it yet.

But there are two hiring tips that I’ve learned from my boss (and podcast co-host!) David Cancel that have been a huge help.

And they both have to do with relying on your senses -- not data:

  1. Pay attention to a candidate’s body language and tone of voice.
  2. Use the “morning after” test -- how do you feel immediately after you get their standard follow up email.

More on those two tips and how to use them in this quick video:

I got David to share the rest of his hiring tips on this week's episode of our podcast Seeking Wisdom, including how we use personality tests at Drift (I’m an ESTJ, btw).

Here are some quick links so you can subscribe and listen to this episode on your favorite podcast app:

There really is no substitute for gut feel and transparency among your team. Especially in a startup or really small company, hiring is like adding a family member - they're a person, not a collection of skills - and all the key folks need to be on board (and need to feel comfortable saying that there's something they can't quite put their finger on that they feel good or bad about). Listening to you talk about interviewing reminds me of when I met with Dave W.. I came out of that interview feeling valued and excited, regardless of the outcome. It's a hallmark of quality leadership.
