Two Hands and 100 Pennies

I believe that we are all built with limitations so that we can learn at once to be humble about our own capabilities as well as we can learn what we're capable of together that we can't accomplish without the support of others. Have you ever realized that when something you're working on falls apart, it's quite often because you tried to do it all yourself? Wait. What if you aren't as omniscient as you think? Maybe you DO need to seek people to collaborate with you. If you do, what would that look like?

Two Hands and 100 Pennies

You have only two hands (if you're lucky). What you can carry is finite just by that definition. The 100 pennies comes from that theory that says if you're communicating with someone, you get roughly 100 pennies worth of information to share with them. If you have to communicate something complex, it'll eat up a lot of those pennies and leave the person with less to remember. If you give someone a super long list of things to remember, they'll run out of pennies, and so on.

So these are two major limitations to getting done what needs doing unless you learn how to use your two hands and your 100 pennies to recruit the support of other people, and get their two hands and their 100 pennies into your game. Apostles of a sort. Can you develop enough people working in the same direction to thrive towards an even bigger goal than just your two hands can carry? Of course you can.

Leaders Make Leaders

I work with a guy who is an astounding developer of leaders. So far, everyone he's brought in to take on an important role in his organization has snapped to and become a vital part of the team. How does my friend do it? He uses his two hands and his 100 pennies to develop and deploy leaders. That effort, repeated a few times, means that he suddenly has the resources to hand much more. He might have 8 hands and 400 pennies at his disposal.

What's the lesson today? Stop thinking like an individual contributor. That's so basic.

"Anna Delvey"? character from the series "Inventing Anna."?

Think like someone with lots of hands, lots of pennies, and a plan to go after. That's the big story. It's your story. Make it yours.
