Two Extremely Contrasting Cases of Leadership

Two Extremely Contrasting Cases of Leadership

In the last week, we have seen two cases of leadership.  One very public case comes from the political candidates vying for their party’s nomination.  Both democratic and republican aspirants are working to build a leadership identity that will get them elected to the highest office in the land.  In the last week, we have seen these candidates turn to insults and ridicule as they try to get media attention about their candidacy.  Rather than debate ideas and policies, they focus on being more bombastic, nastier, and outlandish.  Truth is put aside in the search for attention, any attention.

But there was another, much quieter, leadership ceremony last week.  Navy Seal Edward Byers received the Medal of Honor for his role in rescuing an American doctor help hostage by the Taliban in Afghanistan.  With targeted and aggressive action, Byers and his team recused Dr. Dilip Jospeh.  At the Medal of Honor ceremony, Byers was surrounded by other Navy Seals who supported him.  He was recognized for courage and valor and being the “consummate quiet professional…who is a special breed of warrior.”

What a contrast!

By definition, leadership settings are filled with emotion and intensity.  Real leaders focus on rescuing and helping others more narcissistic self service.  Real leaders demonstrate bravado by their actions more than empty rhetoric.  They don’t put others down, but serve to lift others up.  They don’t insult but inspire.  They don’t take credit; but share credit.  They don’t work alone, but in teams.  We need more real leaders like Edward Byers who demonstrate leadership more by what do than what they say.

I sometimes judge the leader by the type of crowd that follows them. For example Byer's team are loyal, giving, and focused. Sign me up for his team a yeah. Thanks for the great read Dave.

Thanx Dave. If I've learned anything after 20 years USAF and another 20+ in global HR, action v. empty rhetoric, in military service or the boardroom, reveals and distinguishes core leadership character. Once revealed in service to others, it is one of the greatest sources of inspiration.

Dave, I get the general direction that you are pointing us to in the domain of 'leadership'. However, in my understanding 'leadership' is seen in a particular 'context' and 'time'. The two examples that you provided are in different 'context' and 'time' and hence comparing them would be like comparing apples to oranges.
