Two Dogs, One Lesson: The Power of Our Choices
Once upon a time in a quiet neighborhood, I, an avowed non-dog lover, found myself in an unexpected journey of discovery - a journey that taught me a valuable lesson about the choices we make in life.
When I first moved into my apartment, my neighbor had a rather intimidating shepherd dog named Chelbey. Chelbey had a reputation for being a fierce barker, and I, being the unenthusiastic dog-encounter avoider, often dashed for cover whenever our paths crossed.
However, fate had a different plan in store for me. Earlier this year, while I was away on travel, I received the news that Chelbey had passed away during the Christmas season. My neighbor, determined to keep the tradition of having a shepherd dog, welcomed a new furry friend into his home - a lively and spirited dog named Tricia.
Tricia was a breath of fresh air. Unlike her predecessor, she was vibrant and exuded a palpable warmth. My mornings began to include a familiar routine: watering my plants and reserving some water for my newfound canine friend. At first, I cautiously observed Tricia from a distance. Her presence did little to ease my unease around dogs, and I still found myself retreating at the mere sight of her.
Yet, Tricia's enthusiasm was infectious. Each morning, she'd bound into my backyard, wagging her tail, and exuding pure joy. Eventually, my fear began to wane, and I mustered the courage to engage with her. Our tentative interactions gradually blossomed into a heartwarming bond.
I observed how Tricia's nature defied my preconceived notions of dogs. She was gentle, affectionate, and remarkably friendly. Her wagging tail and joyful barks became a delightful part of my mornings. I realized that I had found a canine companion in her.
However, life has a way of presenting contrasts. In due course, my neighbor acquired another shepherd dog, named Check. Unlike Tricia, Check displayed an unfriendly disposition, and our first encounter was unforgettable for all the wrong reasons. Check had bitten my hand during an unprovoked incident, leaving a lasting impression of his aggressive nature.
My apprehension around Check grew with each encounter. His presence signaled a hasty retreat on my part, still haunted by the memory of that bite. Yet, I never anticipated the events that would transpire.
One fateful day, I witnessed a scene that shook me to my core. Tricia was playfully circling a fowl, her joyful barks filling the air. I was so captivated by the spectacle that I rushed inside to grab my phone, intending to record this delightful moment of canine and fowl camaraderie.
However, as I peered through my door, my joy turned to horror. Check, seemingly out of nowhere, charged towards the fowl with astonishing ferocity. In a matter of seconds, the peaceful scene transformed into a chaotic struggle. I screamed, and the commotion caught the attention of Check's owner, who rushed outside.
It was too late. The fowl lay lifeless, a casualty of a sudden and brutal attack. Guilt washed over me like a tidal wave. I blamed myself for not realizing the danger sooner and for not intervening when I could have. At that moment, I felt the weight of my inaction.
As I reflected on the contrasting personalities of Tricia and Check, it dawned on me that life, in all its forms, presents choices. Tricia had chosen to embrace her inherent goodness, radiating love and warmth to all around her. Check, on the other hand, had chosen aggression.
In that poignant moment, I saw a reflection of humanity itself. We possess both the capacity for good and the potential for harm. What sets us apart is our ability to choose - to choose the light of kindness, compassion, and empathy over the darkness of anger, aggression, and indifference.
Unlike animals, we humans possess the gift of free will. We can choose our actions, our words, and the energy we bring into the world. We can choose to be good and to make choices that contribute to the betterment of our world and the lives of others.
In the end, Tricia and Check, two dogs of the same breed, taught me a profound lesson about the power of choice. They reminded me that within us all, there exists the capacity for both darkness and light. It is up to each of us to choose the path we tread and to leave a positive mark on the world.
And so, as I share this real-life encounter, I extend a simple yet potent message: Let us choose the path of goodness, kindness, and love. Let us make choices that illuminate our lives and the lives of those around us. In doing so, we can truly make the world a better place for all.
