Two doctors attacked within 24 hrs in Chennai

In recent incidents across India, multiple doctors have faced violent attacks from patients or their relatives.

Incident 1: A shocking video surfaced showing Vignesh, a man accused of stabbing well-known oncologist Dr. Balaji Jagannathan seven times , walking away calmly after discarding the weapon. Dr. Jagannathan is currently stable.

• Dr. Jagannathan, who treated Vignesh’s mother, was attacked at the Kalaignar Centenary Super-Speciality Hospital in Guindy, reportedly over suspicions of incorrect treatment.
• Security footage shows Vignesh cleaning the knife and concealing it before attempting to flee, while bystanders urged guards to apprehend him.
• He was later arrested, presented in court, and is now in judicial custody.

Incident 2: On the same day, another assault took place in Chennai at the Government Stanley Hospital. Dr. P. Hariharan, a psychiatrist, was attacked by 24-year-old Bharath , who allegedly had a history of mental health issues and had been previously treated at the hospital.

• The altercation occurred in the outpatient department, after which Bharath fled. The police have since launched a search for him.

Incident 3: A violent assault occurred at Indore’s Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital, where a group of armed men attacked doctors and staff with belts, rods, and sticks over a bed shortage, injuring seven.

• Following the incident, the Junior Doctors Association issued a seven-day ultimatum to improve security, warning of a strike if no action is taken.

Of note: A healthcare mishap was reported in Greater Noida, where doctors at Anand Spectrum Hospital allegedly operated on the wrong eye of a seven-year-old boy. The boy, Yudhishthir, was admitted for surgery to address watering in his left eye due to a foreign object.

• His parents claimed that, instead, the doctors operated on his right eye and charged Rs 45,000 for the procedure. Although the parents have filed a complaint, an FIR has not yet been registered.
