Two countries

This week I became a dual citizen, which formalized so many professional and personal efforts and concludes a cycle. I was born a scientist and followed the path that allowed me to reach the goals I once dreamed about it. Now my heart is fulfilled by two amazing countries and their cultures.

As President Biden mentions in the welcome letter: “(…) Every immigrant comes to America from different circumstances and for different reasons. But like previous generations of immigrants, including in my own family, there is at least one common trait: Courage. It takes courage to leave behind everything you have ever known – your homes, lives, and loved ones – and start a new life in another country. (…)”.

Similar journey was once done by my own great grandparents when they left their countries in Europe looking for hope in Brazil. I guess courage is indeed genetic.

It is not an easy road (although from the outside might look like). It’s a road with many ups and downs and so many curves. But, every time I cannot see the light, I remind myself about my choices and reasons, and the bright light reflects in my eyes because of the amazing opportunities I am having.

I am beyond grateful to all people that have helped in each step of the way including every mentor I had since the very first one when I was still an undergrad. I am thankful for their patience, for their knowledge and for guiding me towards my goals. And to all friends that have sacrificed hours of sleep because of the time difference to chat with me and showed me their support.

But nothing would be possible without the unconditional support of my parents. From listening to my innumerous presentations and classes to having enough faith to drop me off at the airport and understanding that I can be there daily virtually but not physically.

Thank you all that have followed my journey.
