Twitter revealed its new algorithm to the world. This is what we know so far.

Twitter is an essential social media platform for businesses and individuals today. So, understanding how Twitter's algorithm works is critical to making the most of your presence on the platform. Recently Twitter revealed how its new algorithm will rank posts and accounts. According to developers on Twitter trying to analyze the new algorithm, this is what they've figured out so far. In the below post, I will explore the 10 ranking parameters that impact how Twitter's algorithm determines which tweets are shown to users.

(Keep in mind that Mr. Musk tends to change his mind at short notice, and this might change)

Likes, Retweets, and Replies: Ranking Parameters

Likes and retweets are important ranking parameters on Twitter. Each like gets a 30x boost, and each retweet gets a 20x boost, while each reply only gets a 1x boost. This means earning likes and retweets is more impactful than replyes, and using Twitter as a megaphone or digital billboard will be ranked higher than conversations. Tweets with high likes and retweets that amplify messages to a large audience will perform better and will be shown to a larger audience.

Images and Videos Help

Images and videos are still the most effective ways to enhance engagement on Twitter. Tweets with images and videos receive a 2x boost in engagement, making them a valuable addition to your tweets.

Links Hurt, Unless You Have Enough Engagement

External links in your tweets will get marked as spam - unless you receive enough engagement. Multiple links in a tweet or Twitter thread could result in a severe spam ranking, affecting your entire account. Generally, it is best to avoid links unless they are absolutely necessary. And if you need to use links, try to maintain an 80/20 ratio of native vs. link posts.

Mutes and Unfollows Hurt

Mutes, blocks, unfollows, spam reports, and abuse reports will all hurt your engagement and eventually affect your accounts. Negative user data will impact your reach on Twitter. Therefore, creating valuable content that resonates with your audience is important.

Blue/Gray/Gold Verification Extends Reach

Twitter offers Blue, Gray, and Gold verification badges for accounts. These badges extend the reach of your tweets and give you a healthy boost in engagement. While getting verified can be costly, it might be worthwhile for brands and businesses.

Misinformation Is Highly Down-ranked

Twitter takes misinformation seriously and down-ranks tweets that are categorized as such. It is essential to fact-check your content before posting it on the platform: no more satire or fake news.

Your Account Is Clustered into a Group

Twitter's algorithm puts you into a grouping of similar profiles, extending your tweet reach beyond your followers to similar people. It is essential to identify your target audience and create content that resonates with them. Do one thing and do it well. Be clear with your choice of content, the audiences you're trying to reach, and the posts you publish.

Posting Outside Your Cluster Hurts

Posting content outside your cluster will not perform as well as niche-specific content. It is essential to stay consistent with your messaging to build a loyal following on Twitter.

Making up Words or Misspelling Hurts

Using words that are identified as "unknown language" will result in a significant penalty to your tweet's engagement. Therefore, it is important to use proper grammar and spelling when creating tweets. Unfortunately, it still needs to be clarified if this applies to other languages besides English. But make sure to double-check your tweets before posting, and don't be too creative in making up new words.

Followers, Engagement, and User Data Are Critical Data Points

Twitter's algorithm takes in three critical inputs: engagement data (likes, retweets, replies), user data (mutes, unfollows, spam reports), and the follower graph (who follows you). Understanding these three data points is crucial to optimizing your content strategy on Twitter.

In summary, this is what we know today. But like I said...that can change. So try to always keep yourself up to date with the latest Twitter changes. It will give you an advantage with your Twitter presence.
