Twitter is Going to Die Soon - See Why

Twitter is Going to Die Soon - See Why

I joined Twitter few years back and found it great tool to connect with like minded people.  I followed many and got followed by same number of people. ( @mamtachhikara )

One of the things I have been trying to wrap my head around lately is the slow decline of Twitter, it was one of my favourite platforms and  I can certainly see its benefits for business with it being another way of finding potential customers in both the B2B & B2C markets But Now I find myself increasingly ignoring it.

I was using it mainly for Business and 2nd for Latest News. Twitter used to be a great way to see what is happening around in the world. But it no more interest me as most of the trends are promotional.

Twitter is Getting Spammy Day by Day

100 people start tweeting about anything and it get in trends. You just need 100 people to Get it trended in India - So as per Twitter ( these are news what people are discussing about and represents opinion of users as whole but that is not True.

See Top 5 Trends are promotional and Twitter is showing these as natural.

So, If I think that by going twitter trends will show me about whats happening around country with twitter users eye, then certainly I am a fool.

Twitter Trends are not effective at all as it only involves spammers not potential customers for Brands.

Twitter is battleground for Political parties now

If you notice 2-3 trends daily are political and if we look at these closely these are mainly promoted by political parties. Again they have network of volunteers and they send one message on their phone with trend tot hem and they start tweeting about that. Then it comes in trends and users think that this is what people talking about. ( Again its spam )

Twitter advertising is too expensive & Looks wastage of money

I have struggled to have any success with Twitter Ads and mostly end up just tweeting less than 20 times a week or tuning a bot to tweet links to our blog periodically which is not really the basis of social media as it removes the social aspect.

This is a major stumbling block for me when it comes to Twitter, sure I have met some great people through it but I find that online groups are now a lot more useful then Twitter meetups using a hashtag. It relates back to my opinion that it offers little to no ROI when compared to other social platforms.

I tracked a paid trend by #IsupportSkillIndia with a tool called Socialert

Find stats as. ( 13th Feb to 17 Feb Data ) This hashtag was promoted for 2 days in India during those dates and could have costed somewhere 10 Lakhs to 15 Lakhs ( I have filled RTI to know that cost, will update once I have that) .

So, it cost around 1000 INR per Tweet and also many of tweets were from govt Official Accounts.

Twitter also has the massive problem of being a hotbed of abuse, pretty much every user must be prepared to receive abuse from faceless adversaries. Twitter is a hotbed of vile people who take pleasure in criticising others instead of improving themselves.

If Twitter were as concerned with this as they are with selling ads they would be in a much stronger position but they continually decide to brush it under the carpet.

All users are Not active

Twitter also boats the least active users on any platform, according to a December 2015 report, 44% of users have created an account but have never sent a tweet (2014 stat). There are many people who setup a Twitter out of reflex and ignore the app on their phone.

Over 500 million people visited Twitter but did not login (2015 stat) which tells you these are not users but the majority are visiting because of articles.

Too much Automation can also Kill it

We can automate tweets, DM, mentions and many other things on Twitter which resulting in too many spams.

For example - You can not send message to multiple users on linkedIn or Facebook but on Twitter with tools you can DM to 1000 users in one go. ( even you can sort them with keywords, locations and many other sortation) which is making it easy for spammers.

There are many tools ( free and paid ) which can covert your twitter profile to automated machine. These are helpful but surely day by day it is going to kill twitter.

See how BSNL ( India's leading telecom company )  responded to Hon. Prime Minister of India.

It has become little more than a search engine at this point with it having little to no impact on business (which is where its future may be). In my opinion, business owners, particularly SME’s, would be much better off using their advertising money on Facebook and Instagram where results are a lot easier to gain and ROI is clear to see.

https://news.sky.com/story/1639812/should-twitter-worry-about-user-numbers

I will still be using it for my business and personal but if twitter is not taking these issues seriously then they are going to die soon.

Also Brands must not just focus on getting trended they must talk about real user engagement not the spammers. ( person whose work is just tweeting and nothing to do with product and brand )

Couldn't resist joining the conversation...while the points highlighted in the article do point out to worry trends for Twitter, one must not lose sight of the great things that this platform has helped...#NepalEarthQuake, #ChennaiFloods, and many more leveraging their analytics. The fact that no superficial (read manipulative) algorithms are used to display its feed makes it still very pure. Having said that what makes Facebook, LinkedIn or for that matter Whatsapp unique compared to Twitter is the authenticity of people behind the messages. If only if Twitter can adopt a method to verify identities especially of Trolls, it can truly leverage the potential for world good. Give this platform and Jack Dorsey another chance to prove its true potential and I am sure all of us will be surprised to see the results :)
