EPIC GAMES has now announced the release of Twinmotion 2020.2, the newest version of its real-time rendering software dedicated to realistic 3D visualisation. The new features include brand new tools, more realistic materials and new assets which will be explored in this article. The update now elevates Twinmotion as a real-time rendering software within the 3D visualisation market.
The main new features will be broken-down to evaluate whether it improves the Twinmotion software into a more complete rendering package.
Animation Tools & Animators
Twinmotion has added an extensive range of new door assets that will automatically fit to existing openings, and can be set to automatically open when camera and/or people assets come near them. This new asset is extremely useful for animation sequences when moving through model allowing doors to automatically open to make it seem as if walking through the scene.
The new animator objects allows you to now link any object to a rotation or translation widget to animate your own custom doors, windows and elevators to move within your animation. This allows you to customise how your assets can open automatically such as doors by adjusting the speed, angle and in which direction it opens up.
Construction Phasing Tool
One of the long awaited updates is the new multi-track timeline-based Phasing tool that makes it much faster and easier to create a phased animation of your project’s construction schedule. This is a huge addition to anyone in the architectural or construction industry as you can watch your projects construction schedule in real time. Each sequence can be watched separately or all as one continuous animation through the outputs.
Enhanced Realism
In Twinmotion 2020.2, the Water material has been improved to increase its rendering quality enabling the user to create more realistic lakes, ponds, river and pools. The Water material has more editing options such as being able to change the depth of the water and how it reflects at its depth to add more detail into your scenes.
In addition to the Water material, rain generated through the weather system has also been updated. The rain now forms puddles in more realistic ways and how it interacts with the ground to make it look true to life.
The material used on existing car assets have been enhanced too a clear coat effect that simulates a layer of varnish applied over a surface, enabling you to more realistically simulate car paint. This has definitely improved how the cars look within Twinmotion scenes and help improve the realism of your final outputs.
New & Updated Assets
New tress have been added that are common in the region of East Asia from China, Japan and Korea. Each of the 15 trees comes in each of the four seasons and three different ages. This now enables projects based in the region to more accurately reflect the native environment rather than being restricted to non-native trees.
Along with the new construction phasing tool, Twinmotion has now updated construction vehicles to add more realism to construction site scenes. Twinmotion have replaced several of the existing construction vehicle assets with improved versions that feature animated rigs. Each construction vehicle offers the ability for customisation with any desired company’s own logo, enabling you to more realistically visualise the construction phase of your project.
New aircraft assets have been added that can be customised with different colours on different parts, and a custom logo similar to the new construction vehicles. These aircraft react to the time of day by turning on lights at night to improve the realism within the scenes. These can be used to emulate current airlines or to create your own.

Our Conclusion
The new features added with the Twinmotion 2020.2 update drastically improves areas in which it was previously lacking. The addition of the new phasing tool and the animators have been features which users have asked for since Twinmotion’s launch proving how they listen to their customer base. The tweaks have further improved the quality of its visual outputs along with providing new animation features to create stunning and informative video outputs.
Even with these new features the Twinmotion 2020.2 upgrade doesn’t cost anything to anyone who currently owns the software or indeed anyone who purchases before the September cut off. Anyone who was in two minds about getting Twinmotion will be swayed by Epics continuation to improve their packages while listening to the demands of their customers.
Pros:
- Twinmotion runs on Mac with stronger stability with the updated operating system.
- New features added which existing users have requested since Twinmotion's released which has drastically improved the software.
- Twinmotion 2020.2 contains support for Archicad 24, Revit 2021, Rhino 7, RikCAD 10, and SketchUp Pro 202.
- Improved support for importing Data-smith files has been included.
- Improved high quality visuals for a low price point.
Cons:
- Still needs more stability testing.
- Needs more additions to the library such as an even wider selection of trees.
