Industry Insights: 5 Key Standards Shaping the Future of EUDI Wallets

On November 28, 2024, the European Commission adopted technical standards for EUDI Wallets, ensuring interoperability and privacy-first designs across member states by 2026.

The European Commission’s new regulations establish uniform standards for EUDI Wallet functionalities and certification, paving the way for cross-border interoperability. With features like local data storage, user-controlled sharing, and a privacy dashboard, the wallets prioritize security and transparency while supporting use cases from banking to travel. Member states now have 24 months to implement these wallets.

→ Hopae’s Perspective: This is a key milestone for the European Digital Identity Framework. While standardization and testing remain, the technical foundation is now set. Hopae supports this journey by streamlining processes and enabling seamless interoperability, helping Europe move closer to a unified, privacy-first digital identity system.

The Spotlight: EU Digital Identity Wallets on the Horizon

"Getting issuers to issue data, and holders to use it responsibly is the main challenge of Wallet's adoption."

Henk Marsman, Principal Consultant Identity and Access Management at Sonicbee, highlight the journey ahead for EU Digital Identity Wallets.

As implementation deadlines approach, experts emphasize that technical development is not the only piece of the puzzle. The true challenges lie in establishing a robust ecosystem of issuers, educating users, and building competent oversight bodies. Two critical dates shape this transformation: November 21, 2026, when EU Digital Identity Wallets must launch, and November 21, 2027, when designated Relying Parties must begin accepting them. However, these timelines depend on maintaining current EU legal frameworks and apply specifically to mandated Relying Parties under Article 5f(2).

→ Hopae’s Perspective: Businesses should focus on IDTech solutions that meet technical requirements and address adoption challenges at the same time. Globally, more issuers are delivering eIDs, signaling progress. However, user adoption requires education, trust, transparency, and ease of use. Hopae simplifies eID integration without disrupting workflows, enabling businesses to provide a privacy-first, user-friendly experience that fosters adoption and strengthens the digital identity ecosystem.

Australia Passes Social Media Age Restriction Law

Australia has enacted a law banning social media access for children under 16, requiring platforms like TikTok and Instagram to implement age verification or face fines up to $33 million. Platforms have one year to comply, and biometric solutions like facial age estimation are emerging as likely options. Privacy protections in the law prohibit requiring government IDs for verification. The law has sparked debate about its potential impacts and the need for evidence-based digital regulation.

→ Hopae's Perspective: Australia's social media law highlights the need for age verification but effective implementation requires careful consideration. Solutions like biometrics must balance privacy, security, and accessibility to ensure safety without eroding trust or fairness.

Mercosur Nations Launch Cross-Border Digital Identity Initiative

Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay are enabling cross-border use of national digital IDs through the Mercosur Digital Citizen program. Initially launching between Brazil and Uruguay, the initiative builds on decades of collaboration in digital signatures and interoperability. Citizens can now access 39 cross-border services, with Bolivia and Chile exploring participation. The program aims to streamline processes for 270 million citizens.

Find more details about this initiative here.

→ Hopae's Perspective: As digital identity systems mature, the need for cross-border interoperability grows, as seen in international efforts like the EU’s eIDAS 2.0 and AAMVA’s Digital Trust Service for mobile driver’s licenses (mDL).

French Mobile Operators Unite to Fight Digital Identity Fraud

Bouygues Telecom, Free, Orange, and SFR have joined forces to combat identity fraud through the GSMA Open Gateway program. They are launching APIs for KYC matching and SIM swap detection, enabling businesses to verify customer data and protect transactions. Tested with financial institutions, the service will launch commercially in early 2025, addressing the 40% rise in identity theft over four years.

Find more details here.

→ Hopae's Perspective: This coordinated effort by French telecom operators demonstrates how infrastructure providers can play a crucial role in digital identity security. The standardized API approach could serve as a model for other markets seeking to balance fraud prevention with privacy protection.
