Twas the Night before DevOps... (2015)

Twas the Night before DevOps, And all through IT,
Few initiatives were working. No more change could there be.
Our corporate traditions named the roles, Oh so clear.
And specialists ruled with their knowledge and fear.
The BU’s freshly re-orged, with each role to a slot.
Had just settled down, nothing changed a whole lot.
Corporate ladders so safe, and the tech tools aligned.
With political teams content, to lead from behind.

When out on the fringes, there rose such a clatter.
We sprang from our cube, to see what was-the-matter.
Away from this safe place, we did brisk-fully trot,
With opened discussions, and collaborative thought.
When what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a plethora of writings, on DevOps made clear.
With many new authors, who insightful writ,
Of Phoenix transformations and Cookbooks, with wit.

More rapid than Opschat, the disruptions they came.
As new struggles and skill sets, we had to yet name.
On Puppet, On Chef, On Ansible and Jenkins!
On Docker, On Vagrant and yes tools can change things!
With analyst quadrants, it scales corporate walls!
Go Agile! Go Kanban! Go DevOps for all!
As wild claims do wonder, before their made right.
So the clash with tradition, still seems the last fight.

This vision sees elephants, still in the room.
Questioning ITIL, should it ever resume?
As we join in discussions to turn things around,
Down corporate silo's DevOps came with a bound.
It was innocence-driven, right from the start
But it poked and it prodded, and yes, that did smart!
And then in one moment, I heard from on top,
The prancing and pawing of career-worried shops.

A bundle of tech was then flung in our pack,
Explore and experiment and hold nothing back.
The vision, it twinkled, the unknown, a bit scary!
Agile, automation and micro-services will now carry.
Not sure DevOps comes, all tied up in a bow.
With Unicorn stories, it still sounds like a good show.
And with fast-fix traceability there is still plenty to teach.
With continuous improvement to avoid a new breach.

Now cross-discipline teams, with new founded skills.
Can learn pretty fast, to avoid those big spills.
Still award and clumsy with conflicting reflection,
And still dancing for some around silo protection.
Welcome the fearful, the skeptics, and the normal naysayers,
Cause they turn pretty quick, and become the big players.
So don't stand silent and watch, go make DevOps just work,
Be courageous and daring, Oh but don't be a jerk.

Acknowledge co-workers, and all that they know,
Shared "version control" can reveal where you should grow.
DevOps can work and without getting too sappy.
Agile engineering and business makes everyone happy.
So I hope that you find, as you get DevOps right,
There's a new type of tech for your business' next flight.

Happy Holidays!
