Tip – If you want your audience to connect with you, make sure you connect with the WORDS you are sharing with them!
LOL, last time I was on TV talking tea with Tre from The Apprentice…
This time I was on the Lee Anderson show talking sausages… yes that Keir Starmer stumble got us giggling again.
Watch a clip from the show below....????
Seriously though, when it comes to public speaking, scripts can be a devil.
Some scripts are written to be read
And
Some scripts are written to be said.
As I mention in the clip, the problem with READING an autocue is you can end up with a jumble of meaningless WORDS that you aren’t owning. This can compromise your authenticity or worse still come across in a non-sensical manner.
Reading an autocue is quite tricky. I felt sorry for Keir Starmer when he stumbled on the word 'sausages' (instead of hostages). It was a slip of the tongue, clearly, no big deal. However, with my producer’s hat on I can tell he wasn’t connecting with the words he was reading at that moment, at that time.
The takeaway here is this…
If you do have a script or autocue, make sure they are YOUR words, words that you connect with as YOU.?
If you need help writing, creating or reading an important speech any time soon, don’t panic, I can help. It’s what I do best. Get in touch.
