Turns out “women’s work” is critical to our economy

a piece on perspective
The Labor Department is on a mission to put a price tag on all that unpaid labor we’re crushing daily. They’re diving into the world of “household production” – you know, the endless cycle of childcare, laundry marathons, and surprise home repairs to understand the true cost of living in the United States.?
“Researchers found that women performed 78% of the total value of unpaid household production in 2019. The number reflects “the patriarchal allocation of household production responsibilities in our society,” per the report.”
This move could shed a light on the gender wage gap and why women often lag in labor participation rates. The aim is to convert the hours spent on tasks into a measurable value so it can be added to expenditure data in 2025. Maybe we’ll at least get a tax credit for all of that hustle. P.S. We hope you survived tax week.
