Turning Your Exercise Intention, into Action - You're like a Premier League football club.

‘I know what I should do…I just haven’t done it’.

Among the most likely things you’ll say to yourself in pursuit of change with your body and performance. Fat loss, fitness for health, strength to resolve injuries, power for a sport you love, this barrier is one you will have experienced.

Ironically similar things are happening in the Premier League now.? There’s chaos at various clubs, and one thing they and you might share, is the need for actual change.

Guess what’s the number one problem people tell me they have, when I first chat with them, regarding their training goals?

Motivation, consistency, having structure.

Now I’m not being cynical, I fully get this and its why in this week’s Performance Peek I want to share with you the ways, to get over this and take the action you need to succeed with your body and its performance.

Let me be honest.

The thing that ultimately needs to change, may from the outside look like your training, your activity and your nutrition, but first and foremost what needs to change to begin is you

Sounds obvious?

As mentioned in a recent post, Sir Dave Brailsford states to change behaviour towards a goal, you have to have two things:

  • The belief that you are capable of achieving it
  • Willingness to commit to changes required to make it happen

I could create you the ultimate strength and conditioning training programme, utilising all my degrees, and years of coaching expertise and scientific knowledge…

But, if you don’t have the above in place yourself, what I bring to the table will likely get lost in excuses (not enough time, work is too busy, family is chaos).

Trust me, I get all of these. I’m human like you and hugely empathetic, but in most scenarios, reasons for not doing something will always be there – as Frank Sinatra said ‘That’s life!’. So what needs to change is your mindset towards this.

?

But guess what, it's not just you...

Your willingness to do the above, whether to gain strength, achieve the best fitness you’ve have had for a decade, or to simply physically feel in the greatest place you have for years, is influenced by something I put into action.

Imagine, If I did your job, with only Google and Youtube videos as advisors, you would painfully watch me waste time on things, make amateur errors and go about achieving tasks in a bad way.

Equally I would know this and feel pretty unmotivated and frustrated, as I’d be thinking ‘what the hell…am I actually doing this right…will it work?’

Often the catalyst to change your belief in achieving greater physical performance, fitness and health, is having a road map that you totally trust.

Going back to the above example of me trying to do your job (badly), if you shared with me your expertise and created a plan of support for me, I’d feel like a different person. It would make me feel and think ‘yep I can do this, I’m doing the right things, it makes sense’.

So, the buck does stop with you and your motivation to begin.? However, the structure created around you, can also commonly be the factor which can allow you make it happen, versus not.

?

Of course I’m going to say that.

Now I know, you maybe thinking a little cynically that of course I’m going to say that. But one of the strongest psychology models created by Richard Ryan and Ed Deci, clearly states that having structure you can relate your goals to, is significantly influential on your motivation to do something.?

I’ve personally spoke to of these guys, and the overriding theme to your motivation and making the changes you want, is having structure. Yet, with goals linked to fat loss, fitness, strength and health, people often have no structure at all.

When you’re having a busy day, riddled with messages, emails, problems at home, traffic - having a structure towards your training goals, means that you don’t need to think about what do…

You just do it.

The roadmap already has determined the exercises for you to do that day, what reps to perform, techniques to focus on.? You just simply trust it and do it. Therefore, you’re more likely to do the training as you don’t need to think about it in excess and play games in your mind on if it works.

?

The Wrap Up.

There's often an awkward void when you hear coaches speak about motivation and training goals. One end is like a military style dressing down with little empathy for the demands we all have in the real world arena of life.

Then the other end is the wishy washy experts who ignore the concept or your motivation simply to get you buy a product.

Hopefully this peek into performance gives you a qualified, informed and genuine insight into how you can achieve great things with your body. It’s a team effort between you stepping up and the structure put in place around you.

Have a great one.

Dave
