Bill Smith, CEO of Firepoint Energy, about their cutting-edge technology that transforms waste coal into valuable materials like rare earth elements, aluminum, silver, gold, and jet fuel.
The Untapped Potential of Waste Coal The U.S. has billions of tons of waste coal in states like Pennsylvania, where more than 9,000 waste coal piles are located. Firepoint Energy focuses on sites with 5 to 15 million tons of waste coal, offering significant untapped opportunities. Their innovative gasification process heats the waste coal to over 1,000°C, extracting up to 98% of valuable elements. From just 8 million tons of waste coal, Firepoint can produce approximately 15 million gallons of clean, synthetic jet fuel per year.
This synthetic fuel, produced to meet strict ASME standards, burns cleaner than traditional kerosene. Additionally, Firepoint extracts key elements like neodymium, scandium, and cobalt—essential for industries like defense and electric vehicles. In one pile, for instance, Firepoint has estimated $382 million worth of scandium alone.

Firepoint’s technology not only generates valuable resources but also addresses environmental challenges such as acid mine drainage, a major problem in coal mining areas. Their operations could clean up polluted water sources and create hundreds of jobs in economically challenged coal regions. By eliminating waste coal, the technology also reduces carbon emissions and pollutants, providing a sustainable energy source for the future.
Firepoint Energy plans to expand from Pennsylvania to other coal-rich states such as West Virginia and Kentucky. Their scalable technology can adapt to produce ethanol, hydrogen, gasoline, or jet fuel, depending on market demand. With the ability to produce hundreds of millions of gallons of synthetic fuel, Firepoint is positioned to be a key player in the energy transition. They are also exploring the acquisition of closed aluminum smelters to use their waste coal technology to generate clean energy, potentially revitalizing those industries.
