Turning Up Your Power Settings

From Darkness to Light – The Real Power of Focus

Have you ever noticed how much the things you focus on tend to dominate your life? We often hear the expression that someone’s got a lot on their mind. But does it ever seem strange to you that the issues that absorb most of your attention somehow manage to obscure everything else? Think about it for a moment. The issues that seem most relevant and visible to you right now are the self-same situations that occupy most of your attention.

And why is this important?

Because we need to break free from the old, archaic habits of dwelling exclusively on our problems. This is the perfect moment to broaden our horizons and see our lives from a clearer, more positive and more creative perspective.

Once you replace negative thoughts with positive ones,

you'll start having positive results.

-      Willie Nelson

The origins of this particular problem are easy enough to understand. They go back to our early history as a species, to a time when we developed a range of powerful survival responses to help us face any kind of danger. We learned to turn our focus towards whatever was perceived as a threat, a danger, a risk or a problem. We zeroed in on the problem and that’s where our attention remained until we resolved the crisis. Or got eaten for lunch by a hungry predator!

And, if we’re being brutally honest, there’s always plenty to occupy our attention - because life is always full of problems! That’s why we tend to lapse into the kind of defensive behaviours that originally helped us survive dangerous situations and to overcome adversity. And those ancient survival mechanisms are still fully functional and operational within our hearts and minds in the technologically-advanced twenty-first century.

  Space-age technology. Stone-age responses.

When we try to understand how our distant ancestors responded to their daily challenges, we can see that the obvious difference between then and now is that most of our problems are very much a product of our perspective. Very few of us have to contend with the challenges of hunting and gathering our food every day or evading large, hungry predators. Yet, we learn from a very early age to see non-life-threatening situations as if they were a threat.

The more positive thoughts you have, the better you feel, which causes you to have more positive thoughts and then you feel even better.

-      James Borg

Yet, in reality, most situations are absolutely not threatening. They’re simply situations that require our attention. The fear, the anxiety, the stress and the defensive responses are not part of the problem. They only exist because we decide at some level to bring them along to the party.

So, if these emotional reactions are not a natural part of the problem, what use do they serve? What possible benefit do they confer on our ability to solve problems?

The short answer is: Not much at all!

Being in a positive state of mind is more important than you might think as the mind cannot be creative in a negative state. New ideas, thoughts and inspiration will only take place when the mind is positive.

-      Joe Hinchliffe

When we add this kind of fear-based negativity to our daily round of challenges, we could argue that they only hinder our efforts to resolve whatever issues we’re facing. The simple fact is, the more you focus exclusively on your problems, the narrower your perspective becomes. It limits your view of what’s possible and often places the problem completely out of context.

However, when you take a step back and consider the challenge from a healthier, clearer and emotionally unbiased perspective, the situation can suddenly look very different and a lot less threatening. And then you can consider the issue against the wider context of a much broader set of possibilities.

By distancing yourself from the apparent threat, you gain a wonderful advantage that encourages the more logical part of your brain to work on the problem. This is where your creativity can be engaged to find multiple options for fixing all manner of problems.

This is also the moment for you to consider all the positive things that are happening in your life. You take a step back, switch off the fear response and start to think calmly and logically. And this is how to shift the problem firmly back into its rightful place: now it’s a puzzle to be resolved, a challenge to be overcome, a threat, perhaps, but something that can be calmly and effectively neutralised. Now you can feel much more in control of your life and suitably pleased that you’ve learned to step away from caveman mode and into a more enlightened way of directing your creative energy.

The advantages of this pivotal shift in perception extend far beyond your ability to find creative answers to your challenges. By encouraging a calmer, more balanced response to your situation, you enhance your health, your ability to sleep well, your digestion and your immune response system. Because stress is one of the leading causes of most of our modern diseases. Learning to turn down your fears and anxieties and turn up your creativity could make an extraordinary contribution to your wellbeing.

Be vigilant; guard your mind against negative thoughts.
