Not turning up to interviews...the aftermath.

As a recruiter we have all experienced working with candidates who don't turn up to interviews without any notice, reasonings or even a call afterwards to explain why.

If you are an interviewee not turning up to interviews, this can have SUCH an impact on both you, and the recruiter you are working with.

It can damage both your reputation and the recruiters.

Here is some pointers that are the results of not turning up to interviews:

  1. Wasted Time and Resources: As recruiters we dedicate a significant time and effort to the hiring process. We spend time working with candidates to find out all about them so we can ensure that we match you to the best clients in the market. The time we spend includes reviewing resumes, conducting video/call screenings, and scheduling interviews. When a candidate doesn't show up, all of these resources go to waste. This lost time and effort could have been used to engage with other potential candidates or work on other critical vacancies.
  2. Increased Workload: Filling a job vacancy can be time-sensitive especially for roles that are crucial to our clients. When a candidate skips an interview, it adds to the workload of recruiters who must then scramble to find alternative candidates and lead to disappoint for the client. This can lead to overburdened recruiters and potentially compromise the quality of their work. It also affects the business that the candidate is recruiting for, as they need to source extra time to arrange further interviews and reviewing CVs.
  3. Damage to Reputation: This is HUGE. Not attending one or more interviews can seriously tarnish the reputation of the recruiting team that you are working with and the company as a whole. Word of mouth spreads quickly in professional networks especially the Accountancy world. If you damage your reputation now, this can have affects for the future. You could be burning bridges with potential future employers and the agency that you may desperately need in the future.
  4. Hiring Delays: Empty interview slots due to candidate no-shows can disrupt the hiring timeline for all parties. Delays in filling positions can lead to a backlog of work, overburdening existing employees, and impacting timelines for everyone involved.
  5. Impact on Team Morale: Within the company, the hiring process is a collaborative effort involving multiple stakeholders. When candidates repeatedly don't attend interviews, it can have such an impact on team morale. Employees who were excited about welcoming a new team member may become disheartened, affecting their motivation and engagement.
  6. Lower Quality of Hire: Rushing to fill a position due to interview no-shows can lead to rushed, and sometimes wrong hiring decisions. Business owners may feel pressured to select from a limited pool of candidates, potentially compromising the quality of the hire. A bad hire can have lasting consequences, affecting team dynamics and productivity.
  7. Missed Opportunities: Finally, not attending interviews can also be detrimental to a candidate. They essentially miss out on potential career opportunities, professional growth, and networking opportunities. In the long run, this could affect their future career within the Accounting world.

In conclusion, candidates not attending interviews without pre-notification can have far-reaching and negative consequences for both recruiters and the companies they represent. We all must try and prioritise better communication, accountability and be effective when arranging these interviews to minimise the impact of candidate no-shows.

TOP TIP- If you can't attend an interview, let your recruiter or hirer know!

It's just common courtesy to let someone know if you're not going to turn up. Even if you don't want to call, just send a quick Whatsapp message to say you've changed your mind

?? it’s not the just letting down the recruiters it’s letting down the businesses you were put forward for and can give the candidate a bad reputation in the local market! Accountancy is a small circle and people talk!
