Turning the Unknown Into the Familiar

Turning the Unknown Into the Familiar

Confidence is something we all want, but it’s not always easy to have—especially when we’re doing something new. One way to understand how confidence works is to think about driving. Let’s look at two different driving situations and how they show what confidence feels like.

Scenario 1: Driving a Route You Know Well

Imagine you’re driving home from work. It’s a route you take every day.

  • You Feel Comfortable: You know every turn, the traffic lights, and even where the potholes are.
  • You’re Relaxed: You’ve got the music playing, maybe sipping a coffee, chatting on the phone, or even snacking.
  • Time Flies: Before you know it, you’re home, and it felt almost effortless.

This is what confidence feels like. When you’ve done something many times, you don’t have to think too hard about it. You’re calm, relaxed, and in control.

Scenario 2: Driving in a New City

Now, imagine you’re driving in a city you’ve never been to before. You need to get from one place to another, and it’s all unfamiliar.

  • You’re on High Alert: You don’t know the roads, so you’re following Google Maps closely.
  • You’re Extra Focused: The music is turned down, you’re not eating or chatting on the phone, and if someone’s in the car with you, you probably ask them to stay quiet.
  • It Feels Stressful: You’re worried about missing a turn or running into trouble, and the drive seems to take forever.

This is what it feels like when you lack confidence. It’s not that you’re bad at driving—it’s just that you’re in an unfamiliar situation.

Why Confidence Feels Different in These Scenarios

The difference between the two situations is simple: familiarity. You’re confident driving home because you’ve done it so many times. You’re not confident in the new city because it’s all new to you.

This shows how confidence works in life. When you’re doing something you know well, you feel at ease. When you’re trying something new, it’s natural to feel nervous or unsure.

How to Build Confidence

The good news? Confidence grows with experience. The more you do something, the less scary it feels, and eventually, it becomes as easy as your daily drive home. Here’s how you can build your confidence:

  1. Take Small Steps: Start with something new that’s not too overwhelming. For example, try speaking up in a small meeting before tackling a big presentation.
  2. Practice, Practice, Practice: The more you do something, the more familiar it gets. Repetition turns the unknown into the routine.
  3. Celebrate Wins: Even small successes are worth celebrating. They remind you of what you can do.
  4. Be Okay With Feeling Nervous: It’s normal to feel unsure when trying something new. It doesn’t mean you can’t do it—it just means you’re learning.

Confidence Grows Over Time

Think about this: the route you take to work or home probably felt confusing the first time you drove it. But now? You don’t even think about it. The same thing can happen with any skill or challenge. The more you do it, the easier it gets, and the more confident you feel.

So, next time you’re nervous about trying something new, remind yourself: it’s just like driving in a new city. The more you practice, the more it will feel like second nature.

Confidence doesn’t come from knowing everything—it comes from trying, learning, and growing. Take that first step, and soon, the unknown will feel just as familiar as your daily routine.
