Turning uncertainty into possibility

Turning uncertainty into possibility

Welcome to Love Mondays More: the weekly Linkedin newsletter that delves deeper into the ideas and concepts driving my Love Mondays email newsletter series .

Why ‘Love Mondays’? Mondays are usually anything but lovable. Studies show it’s typically our week’s low point and Guinness World Records has even dubbed it the "worst day of the week”. So I aim to provide a 3-minute caffeine hit of content to fire up the other 10,077 minutes of your week and stave off the Monday malaise. Don’t just live Mondays, Love Mondays!

Let's face it: uncertainty can be downright scary. Our brains are wired to avoid surprises, and in a world where change is the only constant, it's easy to feel overwhelmed . But there is a silver lining: uncertainty also presents incredible opportunities for growth and development - if we know how to navigate it.

So how do we take on life’s rollercoaster ride of uncertainty? By developing a mindset that embraces change, challenges the status quo, and celebrates growth.

The power of a growth mindset

Have you ever noticed how one negative experience can overshadow ten positive ones? It’s not just you - our brains are wired to pay more attention to negative events than positive ones, a phenomenon known as negativity bias . While it served our ancestors well by keeping them alert to potential threats, in today's world it can leave us feeling anxious, pessimistic, and stuck in our comfort zones.?

?“If uncertainty is unacceptable to you, it turns into fear. If it is perfectly acceptable, it turns into increased aliveness, alertness, and creativity” ~ Eckhart Tolle.

By cultivating what Carol Dweck PhD coined as a growth mindset , we can turn fear into motivation, uncertainty into possibility, and negative experiences into catalysts for growth and development. And as we train our minds for change and stretch ourselves beyond our comfort zones, we unlock a host of benefits that make us better leaders and team members including:

  • Better decision-making
  • Greater resilience and adaptability
  • Enhanced emotional well-being
  • Increased creativity and innovation
  • Higher engagement
  • Improved collaboration and teamwork
  • Increased self-confidence.

Life is an unpredictable journey, full of surprises and challenges. But it's not the challenges themselves that determine our success or failure; it's how we react to them. While we may have a natural tendency towards a fixed or growth mindset depending on the challenge or circumstances, we always have the power to choose how we respond. We can choose to let fear and uncertainty hold us back, or embrace them as opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive. The choice is ours.

Let’s level up your mindset game! Here are four practical steps you can take to cultivate a growth mindset and become a fearless champion of new challenges:

  1. Be more mindful: Take a deep breath and give yourself 5 minutes a day, 3 to 4 times a week to practice mindful breathing . This powerful habit can help you stay calm, think clearly, and overcome negative emotions during tough times.
  2. Be more intentional: Identify areas in your life where you tend to have a fixed mindset or negative thought patterns and create a circuit breaker to interrupt those patterns. Use reminders, post-it notes, or intentional breaks to consistently shift your perspective and cultivate a growth mindset.
  3. ?Be more empowered: Your language and narrative matter! Reflect on how you talk about your experiences. Are you framing them in a negative or positive light? Reframe negative self-talk and limiting beliefs into optimistic, growth-oriented perspectives. Be your own cheerleader and inspire others to adopt a growth mindset through positive feedback and support.
  4. ?Be more adventurous: Instead of fixating on the result, celebrate the journey along the way. Focus on the progress you and your team make as you go and celebrate small wins. And when setbacks happen (because they will), use them as opportunities to learn and grow. Remember, the journey is just as important as the destination.

Our brains are powerful and wondrous things. They have the incredible ability to change and grow throughout our lives, even when faced with uncertainty and adversity. And with intentional effort, we can shape and strengthen our mindset to become resilient and embrace uncertainty while inspiring others to do the same. Let's take control of our lives and be the catalyst for positive change - for ourselves and those around us.

Holly Ransom I was at the event in Brisbane today. Awesome talk. Very interesting and timely for me at the moment. I am bringing up three little ones and I encourage them everyday to question everything they see, hear and are told. The only thing I may have to warn them about is the dreaded Tall Poppy Syndrome. Let's hope by the time they are in the workforce that has gone by the wayside.
