Turning Trauma into Triumph: My Journey to Founding I.M.P.A.C.T Northeast

In the tapestry of life, some threads are woven with challenges that seem insurmountable, and yet, it is often these threads that add the most profound depth and strength to the fabric. This is a story of resilience, a journey from the shadows of a tumultuous childhood into the light of empowerment and self-discovery.

Life has thrown its share of challenges my way, each one more daunting than the last. In the midst of a turbulent childhood marred by domestic, physical, emotional and sexual abuse, I was further burdened by the impact of my mother's alcoholism and the misplaced hatred she directed at me, seeing in me the shadow of my father.

From the tender age of two, adversity cast its long shadow, marking the beginning of a journey through a childhood punctuated by moments of darkness. Growing up in an environment where the presence of a father figure was intermittent and fraught with turbulence, the echoes of domestic violence and emotional upheaval reverberated through the early years. At the age of two sporting my first black eye, and an innocent misstep at three years old led to a painful scalding from a hot pie, a physical scar that perhaps mirrored the deeper, invisible scars left by the chaos at home.

As the years unfolded, the absence of a father and the emotional fragility of a mother struggling to piece together her own shattered spirit set the stage for a challenging passage through school. It was a time marked by the sting of bullying, the struggles of grappling with dyslexia and ADHD, and the constant barrage of physical and emotional trials. Amidst the turmoil, voices of discouragement whispered predictions of a future constrained by the bounds of past generations, foretelling a destiny defined by limitations and unfulfilled potential.

School offered no sanctuary. There, I was the target of relentless bullying—my glasses regularly stolen and destroyed, my spirit repeatedly tried and tested, culminating in a brutal attack that left me with a fractured skull. The pain of these years pushed me to the brink, leading to several failed attempts to die by suicide. I was lost in a sea of despair, desperately searching for a beacon of hope that seemed forever out of reach.

Yet, it is within this narrative of struggle that the seeds of resilience and determination were sown. The journey through the shadows was not a path walked in vain but a crucible that forged a spirit of indomitable strength. Each challenge, each setback, became a stepping stone on the path to self-discovery and transformation.

The label of 'stupid', once carelessly thrown like a dagger, was not a verdict but a challenge to be disproved. The narrative of a future tethered to the constraints of societal expectations became the fuel for a fire that burned with the desire for change. In the face of adversity, there emerged a determination to carve a new path, to build a future not defined by the circumstances of the past but illuminated by the possibilities of what could be.

And so, it was from this place of deep suffering that I found my purpose. I realised that my experiences, as harrowing as they were, equipped me with a profound empathy and a burning desire to make a difference. This led me to establish a charity, a decision born out of the recognition of a dire need for spaces where children and young people can find support and understanding in their darkest hours.

This charity is not just an organisation; it's a manifestation of my journey from victim to survivor, from despair to hope. It's a testament to the idea that our most painful experiences can become the catalyst for our greatest contributions to the world. I founded this charity with a clear mission: to ensure that no child or young person feels as alone and misunderstood as I did.

To those who are struggling: your pain is seen, your cries are heard, and there is hope. Through this charity, I aim to provide the support that I once so desperately needed, offering a lifeline to those caught in the grips of mental health challenges. Let this be a reminder that from the depths of despair can emerge the most powerful forces for change.

This story is not just a testament to the power of resilience; it is a beacon of hope for anyone who has ever felt weighed down by the burdens of their past and the present. It is a reminder that the chapters of our lives are not written by the hand of fate but by the strength of our spirit. The journey from the shadows into the light is a testament to the unyielding human capacity to overcome, to transform, and to transcend.

In the face of adversity, there lies the opportunity for growth, for empowerment, and for the reclamation of one's own story. This journey of resilience and transformation is a powerful affirmation: from the depths of struggle can emerge the most profound stories of triumph.

Together, we can transform trauma into triumph, creating a world where every young person has access to the support they need to navigate their darkest moments. Let's stand in solidarity, fostering a community where mental health is prioritized, and where healing and hope flourish. ??

You inspire me anyway Sharon, as do all the guys I’ve met at IMPACT, and now I’m even more inspired. I had no idea of the depth of trauma you had experienced and the fact you probably have to revisit your life experiences every single day through supporting others through theirs is nothing short of amazing. ??

One of the strongest most resilient women I know. You never seek you own publicity - just deeply care and there for others. Your journey and what it has made you is an inspiration to all.??
