TURNING TEXT INTO GOLD

By W H Inmon

Go ahead. Treat yourself this Christmas. Open up new doors of opportunity. Be prepared for the gold rush that is coming.

The world is turning to new forms of data. Once there was only structured data. Now there is structured data and textual data. And there is a world of opportunity just waiting for you when you start to unravel the world of text. There is modern sentiment analysis. There are medical records waiting to be unlocked. There are corporate contracts that have text that no one has ever analyzed but are worth millions to the corporation. There is warranty text that is full of important data that no one has ever looked at.

And the list of the corporate treasures wrapped up in text goes on.

But the rules of the road for text - capturing, managing, and analyzing text -are very different from the rules of the road for structured data. What you learned yesterday about structured data just does not prepare you for the coming world of text. Crossing the line from structured data into textual data is like living on land all your life then one day starting to live beneath the sea. There are a whole different set of rules for thriving and surviving in the world of text.

There are ontologies. Taxonomies. Context. Flexible data bases. There are disambiguated terms. Textual conflicts. Interfaces between structured and text. There are universal connectors. Inline contextualization. Nexus. Homographic resolution. Alternate spellings.

The list goes on and on. Text is a completely different landscape than structured data.

Prepare yourself now for entering the world of text as a knowledgeable designer and analyst. Be at the first of the line when your company discovers the treasures that are wrapped up in text. Treat yourself to a guide to what you need to know about capturing, managing, and using text.

Take a look at the book TURNING TEXT INTO GOLD. The book is available at Technics Publications and Amazon.

Your career will thank you.

Bill Inmon lives in Denver with his wife and his two Scotty dogs – Jeb and Lena. Jeb and Lena are ready for Christmas which is right around the corner. Jeb wants an extra cookie for Christmas and Lena wants to sit on the couch at night between Bill and Sylvia so she can go get a belly rub from each of them. That is SO satisfying.
