Turning Tacit Knowledge into Explicit Knowledge: Why This is Important

Tacit knowledge is the kind of knowledge that is difficult to transfer from one person to another. It is the knowledge that someone has acquired through personal experiences and independent learning, and it is often not communicated explicitly. This type of knowledge is important because it helps in decision-making, problem-solving, and innovation. On the other hand, explicit knowledge is the kind of knowledge that can be codified and transferred easily through language, symbols, or any other form of communication. It is essential for knowledge management, organizational learning, and continuous improvement. However, turning tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge can be a daunting task. In this blog post, we will explain why it is important to turn tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge and discuss some effective ways to do so.

Knowledge Preservation and Transfer

Tacit knowledge is subjective, personal and context-specific, and it is often lost when people retire, move to a different organization, or forget what they learned. On the other hand, explicit knowledge can be preserved and transferred easily. When tacit knowledge is transformed into explicit knowledge, it can be documented and stored, so it can be shared with others for continuous learning and improvement. Explicit knowledge can also be used to guide new employees or trainees who are learning about the organization’s operations, best practices, and procedures.

Knowledge Management and Organizational Learning

Explicit knowledge is the foundation of knowledge management and organizational learning. It enables organizations to create structures, systems, and processes for learning, innovation, and continuous improvement. When an organization is able to turn tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge, it becomes more efficient, effective, and resilient. It can also better adapt to changes and remain competitive in its industry. Explicit knowledge ensures that an organization does not lose its valuable knowledge when employees leave or retire, as it is documented, stored and shared.

Innovation and Creativity

Tacit knowledge is often the source of innovation and creativity. It represents the experiences, insights, and intuitions that people accumulate over time, and that can be used to generate new ideas and solutions. However, for innovation to be replicated and sustained, it needs to be turned into explicit knowledge. This means that the new concepts, techniques, and strategies that are generated from tacit knowledge must be documented, codified, and shared with others who can build upon them. This process allows for continuous innovation and creativity.

Performance and Efficiency

Explicit knowledge enhances organizational performance and efficiency by providing a standardized and systematic approach to decision-making, problem-solving, and performance improvement. When an organization documents its best practices, procedures, and guidelines, and shares them with its employees, it becomes more consistent, reliable, and trustworthy. This kind of knowledge helps employees to perform their jobs better and be more confident in their decisions, avoiding mistakes that could lead to failure.

Competitive Advantage

Turning tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge can provide a competitive advantage for an organization in several ways. Firstly, it enables an organization to share and apply its knowledge more effectively, which leads to better quality, faster innovation, and a more skilled workforce. Secondly, explicit knowledge allows an organization to make the most of its intellectual capital, by identifying, acquiring and preserving its knowledge assets. Lastly, explicit knowledge helps the organization to meet its strategic objectives, by improving its operations, creating new products, and staying ahead of changes in the industry.

Knowledge in a nutshell

In conclusion, turning tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge is crucial for organizations that want to be successful in the long run. Organizations can benefit from knowledge preservation and transfer, knowledge management and organizational learning, innovation and creativity, performance, efficiency, and competitive advantage. Turning tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge requires effort, time, and resources, but it pays off in the end. Organizations that invest in knowledge transformation are more resilient, agile, and innovative, and are better equipped to adapt to changes and challenges in the market.

Why a discussion forum is a good way to go?

In today's fast-paced world, it's important for individuals to utilize discussion forums to share their knowledge and expertise with others. However, it's equally important to structure conversation topics in a manner which is informative, engaging, and easy to understand. In this blog post, we'll discuss the importance of properly structured conversation topics in discussion forums and explore why the classic discussion forum is still one of the best ways to turn explicit knowledge into explicit knowledge.

  1. Clarity of the Topic: Properly structured conversation topics provide clarity to the reader on what is being discussed. By having a clear and concise topic, the reader can quickly identify if the topic is relevant to them and what to expect from the post. A scattered or unclear topic may drive potential participants away from engaging with the discussion.
  2. Information Accessibility: When topics are structured in a legible format, it makes the information more accessible. This is especially important when discussing complex topics, as it can become difficult for readers to follow the conversation if they need to scroll through countless comments to find the information they are looking for. Structured conversation topics help to break up the information into digestible sections that are easily accessible.
  3. Engagement: Structuring a conversation topic in an engaging manner can lead to more participation and response from other members of the forum. People are more likely to participate when a topic is presented in an interesting and thought-provoking way, instead of being neglected or ignored. In addition to that, proper structuring encourages discussion and debate, which can add depth and value to the conversation.
  4. Clarity of Responses: Properly structured conversation topics help to increase clarity in the responses to comments made by forum members. Rather than having members respond vaguely to previous comments, a clear well-designed topic can help focus responses around one specific part of the conversation. By doing so, it can help to avoid repetitive and irrelevant responses, improving efficiency and the quality of responses provided.
  5. Timelessness: While social media and other chat-oriented tools are taking over the digital world, the classic Discussion forum is still preferred by many due to the quality of the content and timelessness of the products. Discussion forums provide an arrangement where conversations continue to exist as long as there is an active and passionate audience. Forum posts often become a useful resource for many on the web, driving search traffic and providing a useful source of information.

Conclusion:

Properly structured conversation topics contribute immensely to the effectiveness of a discussion forum. A clear and concise presentation of ideas will help keep the conversation flowing and encourage more participation. In addition, proper structuring can increase information accessibility, encourage engagement and debate, improve the clarity of responses, and lead to timelessness. While newer, more casual social media tools have taken over the digital world, discussion forums remain a valuable platform for informative and engaging conversations. By creating structured conversation topics, participants on the forum can continue to share knowledge and insights, engaging in deeper conversations that drive innovation and growth.

As someone who has worked in the knowledge management field for years, I can confidently say that turning tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge can make all the difference in an organization's success. Tacit knowledge, or knowledge that is not easily shared or communicated, can be extremely valuable, but only if it is translated into explicit knowledge that can be easily transferred and utilized by others. When this doesn't happen, valuable knowledge can be lost when employees leave or retire. It can also lead to costly mistakes and inefficiencies when new employees have to start from scratch instead of building upon existing knowledge. So take it from me, investing in turning tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge is a small price to pay for long-term success.
