Most of my life, I’ve believed that mistakes were terrible and, in most cases, unacceptable. But after years of coaching and therapy (yes, therapy: it’s good for everyone), I was able to understand and accept that we all make mistakes in life and at work. What truly matters is how we handle and learn from them. ??
From my experience, these are some key strategies to turn mistakes into growth opportunities:
- Acknowledge and Accept: My friend and I have a saying: “hug your mistake and show it some love.” This means that embracing your mistake is the first step towards improvement. Transparency builds trust and strengthens workplace relationships. This applies to employees but mainly to leaders; accepting our mistakes as leaders makes us human and allows our team to feel comfortable enough to trust us since we’ll always be honest with them.
- Analyze and Learn: Pay close attention to the situation or process, investigate the root causes of the mistake, and use those insights as a learning opportunity not only to avoid repeating the same mistake but also to improve our performance and skills.
- Communicate Openly and Avoid Shaming: As leaders, we must foster a culture of open communication where mistakes are seen as learning opportunities, not failures. Humans, by default, will feel ashamed of their own mistakes, so let’s build a team culture that uses mistakes to grow and leaves no room for negative feelings such as shame.
- Develop Resilience: The important part when you make a mistake is not to focus on that moment forever. What is important is learning to bounce back quickly and move forward to new challenges and even new mistakes with a positive mindset.
- Implement Solutions: This is key: “don’t freeze when you make a mistake.” Just act, be proactive in finding solutions, even asking for help, and implement preventive measures for future situations.
?? Extra Tip: Remember, mistakes are a natural part of the process of innovation and continuous improvement. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes, but rather of not learning from them!
