Christopher Columbus decided to call the Arawak people he stumbled into in 1492 "Indians" and held onto that for the rest of his life out of arrogance. It never mattered to him that they already knew who they were.
In fact, sovereign identity mattered to Columbus about as much as the historical record matters to Donald Trump. While the former was driven by greed for gold as he enslaved, tortured, and killed people in the New World, Trump is driven by his own agenda, which is why he feels he has the authority to simply change the name of an internationally recognized body of water to suit his pleasure.
But this sets a dangerous precedent because it indicates that he feels like he can dictate official reality.
