Turning Course Papers into Public Sociology

Turning Course Papers into Public Sociology

Just a few months ago in November of 2022, Lucas Hanna and I visited Colorado Mesa University (CMU).

We have been working with Dr. Brenda Wilhelm, Professor of Sociology at CMU, for a couple of years now, but this was our first in-person visit to Dr. Wilhelm’s classroom.

During our visit, we gave a workshop to a class of sociology theory students on how to convert course papers into public sociology blogs.

If we skip forward to now, the beginning of February, one of Dr. Wilhelm’s students in particular has taken her knowledge from the workshop and written some really timely content for Applied Worldwide. Mira Houck has now written three articles for our site. Please support Mira's insightful work by browsing through the titles listed below!

We also have one other article to share from our CMU partnership. This article was written by Cloé Fortier-King, a former student of Dr. Wilhelm, who we met digitally while Zooming into their class a year ago.

Cloé’s article Crossing Lines and Code Switching: A Sociological Take uses W.E.B. DuBois’ concept of double consciousness to discuss the intricacies of interracial relationships.

Please help us support Applied Worldwide’s partnership with CMU, these incredible public sociologists, and our vision of applied sociology by clicking on the articles and sharing them with your friends, family, colleagues, and students!

If you teach sociology courses and are interested in hosting a similar workshop, either in person or virtually, please reach out to us at [email protected]—we love working with professors who are passionate about applied and public sociology!

Thank you all for your continued support of applied sociology and Applied Worldwide.

Sincerely,

Stephanie ( Stephanie Wilson, Ph.D. ), Co-founder and Director of Research Services at Applied Worldwide .
